The World Car of the Year awards were more than exciting this year. A jury of 102 international automotive journalists had a thrilling (but in the same time challenging) task of picking the best car of 2022 in terms of design, luxury, performance, and other aspects. Among the many outstanding contestants, they must have had a difficult time selecting the winners.

Unsurprisingly, the electric vehicles dominated the awards this year, showcasing the industry's dedication to commit to a more sustainable, electric future. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was a real success, to say the least, taking home the prestigious award of the World Car of the Year. It also scored as the best electric vehicle and car design in 2022.

The other awards went to Toyota Yaris Cross (World Urban Car) and Mercedes-Benz EQS (World Luxury Car), which leaves us with one distinguished award left — the World Performance Car of the Year. Another prominent German car manufacturer seized the first place here, and we are not surprised even the slightest bit - the Audi e-tron GT.

The Audi e-tron GT is a beautiful and capable EV that well deserves to be a top pick of the World Car Awards. Read on to learn more about what makes the e-tron GT a flagship of Audi engineering and overall efforts in the electric vehicle segment.

The Audi e-tron GT entered the World Car Awards to showcase all the steps that the globally favored German brand has been taking on its EV path. Although it did "lose" in the other categories (Car of The Year or Car Design, for example), the e-tron GT was the best-performing car in the competition. Its biggest competitors were the BMW M3 and M4, the Porsche 911 GT3, and the joined entry of the Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ, which says a lot about the e-tron GT itself.

After receiving the award, Christian Zorn, Head of Product Marketing at Audi AG, said: “Our big goal with the Audi e-tron GT was to reimagine the Gran Turismo philosophy for the electric age. The e-tron GT combines sporty, powerful driving with a high level of everyday usability - it is a real Gran Turismo and a true Audi. Thank you very much to the World Car judges for recognizing the Audi e-tron GT with the 2022 World Performance Car award”.

So, the jury did recognize the tremendous capability and potential of the Audi e-tron GT. How would they not? This ride packs twin electric motors that can produce from 522 to 637 horsepower, depending on the trim (fewer ponies for the standard model, more for the RS). There's also a 93.4 kwH liquid cooled lithium-ion battery to ensure the range of 238 miles and super fast charging. Audi claims you can go from 5 to 80% of charge in 22 minutes.

But what's even more important to note here is the handling and overall performance. Surely, the fact that the Audi e-tron GT RS can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds is impressive indeed, but it's the overall performance that counts in the end - and the RS ticks all the boxes.

The Audi e-tron GT is a comfortable and fun ride, first and foremost. It provides stability and responsiveness you would expect from any standard Audi. Moreover, this ride has an advanced suspension system that makes the e-tron GT ideal for any road conditions. We can only imagine how much fun the World Car Awards jury had while testing it.

Why The Audi E-Tron GT Is Also The Most Beautiful Car Of The Year In Germany

Apart from taking home the trophy from the World Car Awards, the Audi e-tron GT also won the title of the World's Most Beautiful Car of The Year 2021 at the Goldenes Lenkrad (Golden Steering Wheel) awards in Germany. It's easy to see why. The e-tron GT is all muscular and powerful from the outside. The wide stance and the sharp (but still somehow smooth) lines make it stand out on the road and draw attention at all times. Things are no different inside.

Although the interior of the e-tron GT is more along the line with traditional Audi styling, there's no lack of features or luxury inside. The power-adjustable sports seats are not only comfortable, but wrapped in elegant and high-quality materials. The ambient lighting also adds to the overall luxurious feeling.

But in the end, the Audi e-tron GT is all about performance, so most of the features inside are focused on pure functionality. From the head-up display to the latest driver assistance technology, the e-tron GT has everything you need to enjoy an unmatched driving experience.
