Audi certainly knows a thing or two about making a fast wagon. Way back in 1995, the German marque launched one of the first performance-oriented family vehicles - the mighty RS2. With help from Porsche, Audi made sure the RS2 was incredibly fun to drive while still being as practical as a regular 80 Avant. An instant hit, Audi's first RS vehicle is now considered a modern classic.

As the RS lineup continued to expand over the years, Audi ensured it continued to offer a wagon model within it. Since 2002, Audi has always offered two RS wagons - the RS4 Avant and the larger RS6 Avant. The popularity of both has ensured that, since 2012 and 2013 respectively, the RS variants of the A4 and A6 are only offered in Avant guise.

The fourth-gen 'C5' Audi RS6 Avant arrived in 2020. A superb combination of performance and usability, it's arguably one of the most complete cars on sale.

Relentless Power

Like its predecessor, the C5 RS6 has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo TFSI petrol engine. However, that engine is now paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system for added power. As a result the RS6 produces 591 hp and can sprint from 0-60 mph in a claimed 3.5-seconds (although real-world tests have proven times as low as 3.1-seconds are possible). The RS6 Avant has a 190 mph top speed, making it one of the fastest 'family cars' in the world.

Despite being a mild hybrid, the RS6 is far from economical. Expect to get around 15 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway. That said, if you're interested in an RS6 chances are fuel economy isn't a serious concern. However, handling probably is. Despite being a 5,000 lbs wagon, Audi makes the RS6 feel like a sports car. The RS6's RS-tuned adaptive air suspension ensures good ride quality, meanwhile its AWD Quattro system and rear sport differential ensures it always remains planted around corners.

Fun For The Whole Family

Despite its breathtaking performance capabilities, the RS6 is fundamentally a family wagon. The A6 Avant it's based on continues to be a strong seller and a compelling alternative to a crossover or SUV. The RS6 has the same amount of storage space as an A6 Avant, with 30 cubic-feet of cargo room behind the rear seats. With the rear seats folded down, you get up to 59 cubic-feet of space - a figure that's competitive with most crossovers.

The RS6 can comfortably seat five adults. Rear passengers get 37.4 inches of legroom, 39.5 inches of headroom, and 56.5 inches of shoulder room. For reference, a 2022 Audi Q5 comes with 37.8 inches of legroom, 39.3 inches of headroom, and 56.5 inches of shoulder room.

An Abundance Of Tech

The RS6 Avant features a 10.1-inch central touchscreen as well as an 8.6-inch lower display dedicated to climate controls. A 12.3-inch instrument cluster lies in front of the driver. The RS6's Multi Media Interface (MMI) system is responsive with high quality resolution. Internet connectivity allows the MMI to display news alerts and the weather forecast. Every RS6 comes with wireless charging, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

A 14-speaker Bose setup is standard; however, a Bang & Olufsen 3D Advanced Sound System can be had for an extra $4,900. Meanwhile, Audi's Night Vision pack with thermal imagery is a $2,500 option. The $2,250 Driver Assistance Pack is a good pick if you do a lot of long distance driving - it gives you a wide array of semi-autonomous features. Dynamic Ride Control suspension provides a sportier ride and can be had for an extra $1,250.

Unsurprisingly, It's Expensive

The RS6 Avant is seemingly the perfect all-round car. Insane performance? It's got it. Room for the kids and dog? Tick. Plenty of comfort and all the latest tech? You bet. However, the ultimate daily driver does come at a hefty price. The 2023 Audi RS6 Avant starts at $116,500 (or $117,595 after delivery). The RS6 Avant comes with a lot of equipment as standard; however, there's still enough options available to cross the $150,000 line. Still, few cars offer as much versatility and performance as the RS6 Avant.
