There are car meets all the time for different car classifications, sometimes for muscle cars, sometimes, classic cars, and supercar meets for the well-heeled enthusiasts and YouTubers.

Here’s something different, a meetup for the ubiquitous and varied Volkswagen Type 2, a type of van, camper and people-mover with a massive cult following.

The Volkswagen Bus Festival is a historical get-together of the much-loved Volkswagen Type 2 series of vehicles that rose to fame particularly in the swinging sixties.

We take a quick look at the proposed party being arranged by Volkswagen and what the big fuss is all about.

The Volkswagen Bus Festival 2023 Will Be A huge Party For Volkswagen Owners

There hasn’t been a Volkswagen meetup aimed at the camper-van-crazy subculture since 2007, when the turnout was literally massive – VW were correct to assume that people would travel from far and wide to witness this largest of one-make meets.

In the legendary ‘Bulli’ meeting of 2007 – Bulli being a German term for referring to the Volkswagen buses generally – there were more than 70,000 attendants from all over the world in a “party that is unrivalled to this day”.

Of course, there are more bus festivals for the beloved VW van, but the one thrown by the automaker itself has a reputation in the community for being worth a go.

Since the passing of more difficult times, the 2023 Bus Festival is confirmed and preparations well under way for one of the best opportunities for colorful Instagram posts and good times ever.

What’s Planned So Far At Volkswagen’s Bust Festival 2023

Unrelated to the Busfest or previously ‘Vanfest’ festival in the UK, this one is organized on behalf of Volkswagen and is one of the largest meets of Volkswagen buses in the world.

It will take place in Hanover, Germany in 2023 over the weekend of June 23rd -25th, and tickets will be on sale from 15th August 2022.

Volkswagen says it is an ‘event to remember’ and goes on to say on their website: “For all Bulli enthusiasts and camping fans from young to old: A varied program with exciting special exhibitions, Bulli curiosities, a Kids Club and much more is planned at the Festival Plaza. Of course, there will also be a matching soundtrack”.

In addition, any Volkswagen commercial vehicle is welcome, be it an Amarok pickup, one of the larger commercial vans or even a Caddy – the successful small, car-like vans popular in Europe.

On The VW Bus Festival 2023 Camping Grounds In The Biggest Volkswagen Meet Ever

Tickets for the campsite within the grounds of the festival start at around 30 dollars, including a space in one of 6000 lots designed for vehicles to be parked and set up for camping – tents are also allowed.

At the VW Bus Festival there will be power, sanitary facilities and showers for campers depending on the type of camping area reserved by the customer.

This means it should become an interesting and comfortable place to come and pitch up, enjoy a weekend in Germany and gaze at the massive group of assembled Volkswagen vans, campers and buses.

Day tickets will be available too for people who do not need to camp and would like to visit the festival during the day only – but the camping aspect presumably makes the whole experience more immersive and enjoyable.

Open To All Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles And All VW Buses

The beloved Volkswagen Type 2 goes by many names, including the ‘Bulli’ name we already mentioned.

Depending on the body style, a Type 2 – which would later be called a Transporter and then Multivan - could come as a van workhorse, a Kombi hybrid or a microbus, all of which make for a cool camper through various levels of conversion.

Starting with the T1 generation, the VW van now extends all the way to the T7 generation, which is new for 2022 with a hybrid drivetrain option and expected to be a hit in Europe just like all its predecessors.

Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz is not a direct protagonist in the Volkswagen Type 2 canon however, as it is a new all-electric platform and comes with unique styling and features.

One thing the VW camper always needed was a modern powertrain; although the previous diesel units were fit for purpose, power or emissions weren’t high on the agenda, unless you got the twin-turbo-diesel and DSG gearbox available on certain models only.

With the new electric powertrain in the ID. Buzz and the hybrid options coming for the T7 Multivan, the Type 2 is all grown up and moving with the times.
