When Ford unveiled the 2024 Mustang earlier in 2022, it got many of us incredibly excited. Rumors had been flying around for a long time about whether this next Mustang would feature a hybrid engine. Thankfully, for those who love the ICE model, that was not the case. The 2024 Mustang will have three engines at its disposal, while Ford also unveiled the Dark Horse edition. This takes the 2024 Mustang to the next level.

This is something Ford is clearly keen to market to us ahead of the holiday period. Christmas is coming up, and Ford has given us an early present. They have released the horsepower numbers for the seventh-generation Mustang. Including the dramatic Dark Horse version. The Mustang Dark Horse takes center stage, becoming the most powerful factory Mustang yet. Many of us have been hankering after the power numbers for the new Mustang for quite a while. So to finally have them on hand, and just before the end of 2022, is certainly a bonus. It looks like Ford is going to make the next Mustang very special.

The Mustang Dark Horse Leads The Way

The Mustang Dark Horse is the highlight when it comes to the 2024 Mustang lineup. Ford says that a uniquely engineered fourth-generation Coyote V8 engine is under the hood. This is a 5.0-liter V8 engine, with 500 hp on offer and 419 lb-ft of torque. Ford says this is a new benchmark for both Mustang street and track performance. Plus, it has the added bonus of being the most powerful non-Shelby edition of the Mustang ever. Ford says this is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 to feature within a Mustang.

How Ford got this performance is through a few upgrades. The Blue Oval added a new uniquely balanced crankshaft, as well as forged piston connecting rods. The latter of these upgrades was first seen on the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. This helps handle the higher cylinder pressures, and piston speeds the Dark Horse produces. Ford has strengthened camshafts of this Mustang. This sees an extended operation closer to the 7,500-rpm redline. Ford wants the Dark Horse Mustang to offer the most extreme driving performance of all the 2024 models. But the rest of the range is equally exciting.

The next Mustang in the range is the GT version of the Mustang. Ford says that they are offering the most powerful Mustang GT 5.0-liter V8 ever with its latest edition. The Mustang GT offers 480 hp and 415 lb-ft when it comes to the standard edition. However, there is an option for an active-valve performance exhaust system. This brings the power level up a little bit to 486 hp and 418 lb-ft of torque. For also says the free-flowing design of the V8 allows for a custom V8 sound.

There is also the ability to lose the valves in order to restrict the amount of noise made by the car. The innovation however does not stop there. Ford also says that the fourth-generation Coyote V8 two segment firsts. These are a dual intake and dual throttle body induction system. These are also matched with structural improvements as well as an upgraded oil pan. This minimizes the induction loss by enabling higher air flow rates, capping off the innovation in the Mustang GT. The horsepower and torque ratings are the same in both automatic and manual transmissions. That applies to the Dark Horse and the GT.

We shouldn’t forget about the turbocharged Mustang EcoBoost either. For while its own horsepower figures aren’t as impressive, they are still plenty for daily driving. This new Mustang EcoBoost offers up a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, an all-new engine too. And this itself produces 315 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. This is the most power, Ford say, in a four or six cylinder standard Mustang ever. We even get the optional active-valve performance exhaust here too. This is also designed to bring even more excitement from the car’s turbocharged soundtrack.
