If you want a good, tough and rugged off-roading machine, then there are plenty of choices out there. But one company that knows a thing or two about off-roading is Subaru. The Japanese car manufacturer is perhaps most famous for its exploits in the World Rally Championship with the rather incredible Impreza, one of the brand's most iconic cars and one that still takes our breath away today. Of course, the Impreza is a core part of the Subaru lineup and very much still going strong.

Now, the company has launched the latest iteration of the Subaru Impreza for 2024 as the model enters its sixth generation, and features a sportier five-door hatchback design. Subaru have added a new RS trim level to the car with its potent Boxer engine, and this latest edition makes 30 years since the car made its debut back at the 1992 Los Angeles Auto Show. Ever since that day, the Impreza has remained a legendary part of the Subaru lineup and this new generation aims to take it to the next level and make it even more remarkable.

Subaru has worked hard on the 2024 Impreza, and a core part of this is evident in the design of the new car. Subaru say that for 2024 they have streamlined the Impreza to greater emphasize its sportiness, versatility and its capability. Subaru say that the design overall has a 10% higher torsional rigidity, as well as a full inner frame construction and additional structural adhesive. This combines to add better body rigidity to the car and lighter weight as well. Seeing Subaru make an effort to keep the car light is refreshing in a world of ever heavier cars.

Sportiness is very much the name of the game with this new Impreza. When it comes to the base and the sport trims, the new Impreza features the 2.0-liter four-cylinder direct-injection Boer engine. This produces 152 hp as well as 145 lb-ft of torque, plenty of power. Although as we will explore later, there is another highlight to the 2024 Impreza. The 2024 Impreza also receives a version of the WRX sport car’s dual-pinion electronic power steering rack. This will offer a more direct and natural steering feel and greater responsiveness as well.

The news that will excite Subaru fans the most though is that Subaru is bringing back the RS name for the Impreza, with the new trim level adding even more performance with the 2.5-liter Subaru Boxer engine. This engine delivers a very impressive 182 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. The RS model has a Lineartronic CVT and also features an eight-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters. This allows the driver to control that transmission via eight pre-set fear ratios.

The RS trim level also features 18-inch exclusive wheels as well as unique exterior and interior elements. Those exterior elements include RS badging on the front doors and rear hatch, and a dark gray finish on the alloy wheels. There is also a black finish on the front grille, side spoilers and side mirrors plus upgraded LED headlights and fog lights. Interior wise, the RS Impreza has gunmetal and simulated carbon fiber interior trim accents, plus sport front seats in black cloth with red bolsters. Carpeted floormates feature the RS logo and the RS also has an upgraded leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter, aluminum alloy pedals, heated front seats plus rear USB charging ports.

Subaru has upgraded the climate control system to focus on occupied seats in the car, versus the whole cabin, which should also help with fuel economy. The Sport trim also adds the Starlink 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system that features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto as well as Keyless Access with Push-Button start and fog lights.
