If there's one thing Nissan knows how to do but chooses not to, it's make sports cars. Just like Toyota their history is full of historic nameplates, Fairlady, Skyline, and Silvia. Nissan currently has the R35 GT-R and 370z in production. But with models now over a decade old they', soon need a replacement. The new Z is coming but with a twin-turbo 3-liter V6 motor it won't be long for this world. Nissan has to look to the future and embrace EVs. We can think of no better way than to bring back a dormant nameplate and take the fight to performance EVs like the Porsche Taycan.

A successor to the S15 Silvia could dramatically change the formula.

Will Nissan Make A New Silvia?

Vice President of Nissan Design Europe, Matthew Weaver took on the task of redesigning the original Nissan Silvia for the EV age. Unveiling his design in September 2021 this reborn model seems incredibly exciting. Retaining the classical three-box proportions of the original Silvia Nissan appear to embrace the uncertainty of the future by boldly showcasing their heritage. An incredibly simple design, Weaver has opted to increase the aggression of the body's creases. Embracing contemporary design trends like light bars.

Weaver's design has no trunk but does have a hood. Potentially this means the motor and battery are in the rear of the car. If this Silvia comes to production this would create tail-happy, Porsche 911 handling characteristics. A novelty in the world of EVs. Manufacturers mount batteries low in the car to create both ample cabin and storage space. This change upturns the conventions of the Silvia legacy. Each generation of Silvia opted for a front-rear layout. However, in the transition away from internal combustion engines the formula sees plenty of change.

When Will The New Silvia Launch?

One Nissan fanatic, the YouTuber ThatDudeInBlue, weighed in on the topic. He sees the rise of Toyota GR, the return of the Integra, and rumors of Nissan's newest entry as a JDM renaissance. The Miata is selling well, Toyota has two tiers of sports cars again, the GR86 and the Supra. As well as their upcoming hot hatches.

For ThatDudeInBlue, the time is now right for a return of the Silvia. Nissian tried in 2013 with the IDx, but they cancelled the project. The YouTuber proudly owned a Nissan 240SX for years, as did other members of the YouTube community like AdamLZ. The YouTuber claims that these are the individuals that would buy an S16. He warns that to make a faux-retro Silvia would be a big mistake for the brand.

According to Best Car, a Japanese print car magazine, Nissan is looking to make a new Silvia. They propose that the car will launch in 2025. Three years from concept to production isn't a stretch. The Z Proto, the concept car for the upcoming 400z, launched in 2020. The production car hasn't made it into the wild because of supply chain issues but should do before the end of 2022. The 400z's predecessor, the 370z had its last facelift in 2018, and it's likely this is when 400z development seriously began. If anything, Best Car's prediction of a 2025 Silvia is a little pessimistic. 2024 could see this new jewel to the Nissan crown.
