James May, aka Captain Slow, has an impressive collection of cars and motorcycles in his garage. He has such an eclectic taste in vehicles. He loves to tinker with them as much as he loves to drive them. It’s a well-known fact that May, like his co-star Richard Hammond, loves motorcycles. He's owned quite a few motorcycles over the year. He prefers sporty British and Japanese motorcycles and has been known to get a speeding ticket or two when traveling on two wheels.

May also enjoys going fast on four wheels. His garage is full of fast sports cars and supercars. However, he also enjoys traveling in style at a leisurely pace. That’s why he's owned multiple Rolls-Royces over the years. May has shown he's a classy fellow by buying upscale cruisers like a Rolls-Royce Corniche and a Bentley T2. May is a huge fan of Porsches (another trait he shares with Richard Hammond), and he's owned many Porsches throughout the years. Here’s a look at 25 vehicles in James May’s garage.

25 1971 Triumph 2000

ww.hagertyinsurance.co.uk

This beauty of British automotive history is a fine car to have in any collection. Well, actually it’s not, but May did think this rather bland car would be a good gift for his girlfriend when he bought it for her in 2009. She didn't agree at all, though, but mostly because the rather unsightly brown paint job didn’t impress her in the slightest. Needless to say, May ended up keeping the car for himself. Well, at least he still has a girlfriend, and now, he has a bland sedan in his car collection, too.

24 1985 Porsche Carrera 3.2

via bmwblog.com

A car collection wouldn’t be complete without a Porsche, or two Porsches, or even three. A 1985 Porsche Carrera 3.2 is certainly a good place to start.

May was immediately smitten by this cool Porsche, and he bought it the moment he saw it.

It was so amazing that he just couldn’t resist. This Porsche has a silver paint job and blue leather seats, which go perfectly together. It was a beauty, and May knew he had to have it. The Grand Tour host managed to get a few dollars knocked off the price tag, too. That’s a bonus.

23 Alfa Romeo 164

via wikipedia

May once had one of these four-door executive saloon cars in his collection, and surprisingly, it was before he achieved fame and fortune as a celebrity car journalist. This was a daily driver for May back when he worked a 9-to-5 office job. He loved the car then, and he still loves it today. May loved the car so much he bought an Alfa Romeo 164 three-liter V6 for an episode of Top Gear. The challenge was to buy a car for less than 1,000 pounds.

22 Bentley T2

via pintrest

Talk about a classy and luxurious car. The Bentley T2 is an extremely elegant car, and that’s one of the main reasons James May likes this beauty so much.

May actually gave this car away as part of a contest. While he owned it, May took extremely good care of this classic car, and he even drove it in the Norwich Union MSA Classic.

May even had the hood repainted because the primer was showing through from too much polishing.

21 Rolls-Royce Corniche

via wikipedia

No car collection would be complete without a Rolls-Royce or two. May owned this beautiful classic Corniche, but he had to part ways with this beauty because it wasn’t good for his skin. He discovered that he was allergic to the leather seats in the Corniche and that they were making him extremely itchy. That’s a very unfortunate reason to have to sell a Rolls-Royce. Still, health is far more important than a person’s car collection.

20 Datsun 120Y

via wikipedia

The Nissan Sunny, or the Datsun 120Y as it was known in Europe, isn’t a particularly exciting vehicle. It’s actually quite bland. However, it's reliable and dependable.

This isn’t the car you'd buy if you want to put the pedal to the medal, so it may just be the perfect car for James May, who goes by the nickname "Captain Slow."

The Telegraph put the 120Y on its 100 Ugliest Cars list. "What's with the Datsun 120Y? I've just bought one of those," quipped May.

19 1984 Porsche 911

via youtube

Just like his good friend Richard Hammond, May really loves Porsches. One of the amazing Porsches that May has had in his garage is a 1984 Porsche 911. It’s hard to believe that May would ever part ways with this beauty, but he did. He sold this amazing Porsche at auction, and whoever bought it is in for a real treat. The Guards Red Porsche appeared on both Top Gear and James May’s Toy Stories. This is one famous and cool Porsche.

18 Fiat Panda

autoplus.fr

The Fiat Panda was James May’s daily driver for a number of years, and he was absolutely heartbroken when he had to get rid of it. He traded it in for a BMW i3 Electric, which was certainly an upgrade. However, May still has a sentimental attachment to the Fiat Panda that he owned for so many years. “Never has a humble car served its owners so dutifully. If cars know stuff, the Panda must know I have a pampered Italian supercar in the garage for special days. I also still have that old Roller for collecting people from the airport. The Panda just sits there witlessly, outside in all weathers like a Derbyshire sheep, waiting to be abused,” he wrote in a Top Gear Column.

17 Saab 9-5 Aero

via cardomain.com

The Saab 9-5 Aero is a perfect daily driver. It’s solid, dependable, and offers a smooth ride. May owned a 2005 Saab 9-5 Aero, and the car would be right at home on James May’s BBC show: Car’s of the People. This is a modern and powerful car that's built for the everyman. The 250 bhp engine in the Aero made it quite a beast for what was otherwise a standard executive car. It had all the practicality you'd expect from the Swedish car manufacturer, but it had an extra bit of oomph.

16 1992 Range Rover Classic Vogue

via strongauto.net

May bought a 1992 Range Rover Classic Vogue and put it to the test against Richard Hammond and his 1992 Range Rover Classic Vogue. The pair bought the exact same model of Range Rover to see who could pick the better vehicle.

The challenge was to see who could buy the better example of the same vehicle for a price of 4,000 pounds.

May’s silver Vogue with a grey interior was impressive, but he still lost to Hammond. The best wasn’t too costly, though, as May simply had to buy Hammond some curry.

15 Vauxhall Cavalier Mk1

via pintrest

There’s not really anything special about this car, and it’s about as ordinary as any car can be. Perhaps that’s why May finds it so charming. Plus, it was the first car that May ever owned, and people tend to remember their first cars even if they're boring and bland. “It was like going into space—it nearly killed me with excitement,” he said of the Vauxhall Cavalier Mk1. May’s car collection has come a long way, but this is where it all began.

14 Ferrari 458 Speciale

May’s nickname, "Captain Slow," fits perfectly when you hear about his attempt to buy a Ferrari 458 Speciale. He hemmed and hawed for so long that when he eventually pulled the trigger and decided to buy one when the dealership was already sold out. It’s a fantastic car to be sure, but the price tag would make anyone balk, so it’s no wonder he took his time making this purchase. Even a reluctant May can’t pass this beautiful car up.

13 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera

via rennlist.com

James May’s garage is always full of Porsches. He can’t get enough of the amazing craftsmanship put out by the top-notch German automaker.

2009 was a good year for the 911, and May certainly agreed. That’s why he bought a beautiful Porsche 911 Carrera.

A car collection simply isn’t up to snuff without a 911 or two or even three. The 911 is simply iconic; you may need to baby it a little bit, but it even works as a daily driver. James May can attest to that.

12 Ferrari F430

via dupontregistry.com

James May simply can’t pass up an opportunity to brag about this amazing supercar. May has wanted a Ferrari for his whole life, and when he finally purchased this one, he described it as magical. The power, speed, and simplicity of the Ferrari F430 really impressed May. This car was so impressive to him that he worried about scratching it while taking it out of the garage. The supercar gave him a nostalgic feeling, and it reminded him of how he felt when he obsessed over cars in his youth.

11 Mini 1275 Special

via gomotors.net

May reportedly bought this Mini after having one too many drinks and doing a bit of online shopping.

May’s Mini is hip and cool, thanks to its checkered roof and spotlights on the front grille.

This seems like a perfect car for May because not only is he a huge fan of cars, but he also loves toys. The Mini 1275 Special is so small that it seems more like a matchbox toy car than an actual full-sized car.

10 Honda Cub 90

via ebayimg.com

James May isn’t just a fan of fine automobiles. He also has a soft spot for vehicles with two wheels. One motorcycle that May has had in his collection is the bestselling and iconic Honda Cub 90. This little bike has plenty of get up and go, and it’s actually the bestselling motorcycle of all time, thanks to its popularity in countries like Thailand and Vietnam. May fell in love with this motorbike because of its durability. He joked that you could throw it into a canal, let it sit, and then come back ten years later to find it still in working condition.

9 Triumph Daytona 675R

via ebayimg.com

May’s impressive motorcycle collection has to include at least one British-made motorcycle. Could he really call himself a motorcycle enthusiast without owning a Triumph? May has owned a Triumph Daytona 675R. This incredibly fast bike is a dream come true for speed enthusiasts, but May had a bit of bad luck when his Triumph was almost stolen. Thankfully, he caught the bandits before they could make off with the bike that he bought only a few days earlier.

8 2005 Porsche Boxster S

exoticmotorcars.com

The Vauxhall Cavalier Mk1 may have been the first car that May ever bought, but that hunk of junk was worn and used. The first brand-new car right off the lot that May bought was the 2005 Porsche Boxster S. May waxed poetic about this amazing feat of German automotive craftsmanship. The sporty car brought him so much joy. He called the car a freshly minted and flawless artifact. He seriously worried about wearing the car down since he had never owned a brand-new car before.

7 BMW i3 electric

James May doesn’t have the same disdain that Jeremy Clarkson has for electric cars. In fact, one of his daily drivers is an electric vehicle. However, it’s not just any old electric car that May has in his garage.

When he’s not biking to the shops or work, he drives a stylish and hip BMW i3 electric.

May bought this small hatchback when it was new in 2014, and he's used it ever since. May put his i3 to the test against Clarkson’s Volkswagen GTI in an episode of the Grand Tour.

6 1976 Jaguar XJ6 Coupe 4.2

ccmarketplace.azureedge.net

James May’s 1976 Jaguar XJ6 Coupe 4.2 had its time in his garage, but sadly, that time has passed. It’s a classy car to be sure, but the hideous mustard-yellow paint job might not be particularly appealing to everyone.

Still, May liked the paint job enough, but not enough to prevent him from selling the Jag so he could have more room in his garage for the Porsche Boxster S. It'll be missed, but May replaced it with a better car.
