When Wally Elder, from St. Loius, Missouri built a Dodge Daytona car that he found scary to drive, his biggest regret was that he sold it. After years of trying to track it down, he found it. But trying to convince the owner to sell it fell on deaf ears.So Wally made himself an even scarier Daytona, and YouTube channel Barcroft Cars just covered it in their latest episode of Ridiculous Rides. It is scary, yes, but oh so very awesome too.FOLLOW HERE: HotCars Official On Twitter

A Terrifying Car, “Pro-Street Throwback”

Technology has changed, a lot, from back when Wally made his first Daytona to now. Everything about this 2,400-horsepower mean-street machine is hand-built. From the double-frame rail chassis to the crankshaft to even the cylinder heads, pistons, and rocker arms.

The engine is an insane 8.6-liter HEMI, with a high-helix blower and a carbon-fiber injector. There’s a three-speed transmission mated to a 4.10 gear ratio. There is no overdrive on this car, so all of the alleged 2,500 horses go into the drivetrain and hit the pavement running, peeling the car off the asphalt like a waxing-pro salon worker.

The body is a Frankenstein mix of original body parts, as well as steel reproduction with some fiberglass mixed in for good measure. The rev of the engine, more like a challenge, is loud enough to get the adrenalin going.

Rebuilding A Dream

The 2,500-HP Daytona Streetcar By Wally Elder

Wally Elder of St. Louis Missouri was born to love cars, especially since his dad, Cliff loved cool cars and built a 1936 Ford, featured in print. In his halcyon days, Wally built a pretty cool purple-and-white Dodge Challenger that got him good press. And so in 1988, Custom Auto Works was born.

In 1991, Wally also built a 1969 Dodge Daytona clone. He painted it red with a white stripe and it bore that overblown Daytona wing. It had a 6.4-liter Hemi engine that stuck out of the hood and was a popular print media star for its time. Wally decided to strike while the iron was hot, and so he sold it. Later regret set it. He tried to find the car, and then also tried to tempt the owner into selling it back to him, but it was a no-deal.

So Wally dug his heels in and made himself a brand new Daytona, far scarier to drive than the original one. For now, his new Daytona is a show car and has not gone through its paces. Wally Elder says he's scared of all the raw power it exudes but he promises, one day, this Daytona will show the world just what it can truly do.
