Car or motorbike racing has long served as a means of recreation, a test of driving skills, and most importantly, the show of engineering superiority. Automakers often take their mechanical creations to the tracks to break/establish land speed records that are higher than that of previous holders.

Speed records attained only by racing cars and bikes not too long ago are now being obliterated daily by street-legal vehicles. There is a silent war in the auto industry about which supercar does 300 mph and which superbike does 200 mph. With the advances in technology, more supercars and superbikes are clocking those previously elusive numbers. 10 Hennessey Venom F5 (311 MPH)

Built in the United States by Hennessey Special Vehicles, the Hennessey Venom F5 is the successor to the record-breaking Hennessey Venom GT. The Venom F5 is built from scratch with a carbon fiber body to save weight with a new design and chassis.

Powered by a 6.6-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 1817 hp and 1193 lb-ft of torque, the Venom F5 has a power-to-weight ratio of 1.34 hp/kg. The $1.8 million American supercar clocks 60 mph in a blistering 2.4 seconds and has a top speed of 311 mph.

9 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ (304 MPH)

When a Bugatti Super Sport crossed 300 mph in 2019, Bugatti decided to celebrate the landmark feat by building a production car based on the record-setting car. The resulting beast, stunning with its black and orange paintwork, features an exterior designed to reduce drag while increasing downforce.

Power is supplied by a monstrous quad-turbo W16 powerplant displacing 8 liters to produce 1578 hp and 1180 lb-ft of torque. Priced at $3.9, the Super Sport 300+ goes from 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds and has a top speed of 304 mph.

8 SSC Tuatara (282 MPH)

After a disputed claim of achieving a two-way average of 316 mph, the SSC Tuatara was taken to Florida in January 2021 to set the records straight. This time, driven by Larry Caplin, it was able to average a verified 282.9 mph top speed on two runs.

The Tuatara is powered by a 5.9-liter twin-turbo V8 which runs on E85 flex-fuel to crank out 1750 hp. Pairing with a 7-speed automated manual transmission, it sends the $1.9 million Tuatara to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds.

7 Bugatti Chiron (261 MPH)

Introduced in March 2016 to replace the iconic Veyron, the Bugatti Chiron's top speed of 261 mph secures it a spot on our list. Like its predecessor, the Chiron's body structure is made of carbon fiber, and it uses the same 8-liter quad-turbo W16 mill.

For the Chiron however, the engine has been heavily upgraded to produce 1479 hp and 1180 lb-ft of torque. 6 Koenigsegg Regera (251 MPH)

Unlike other Koenigsegg nameplates which are lightweight speed machines, the Koenigsegg Regera, introduced in March 2015, is a luxury grand tourer. The Swedish carmaker, noted for its record-breaking cars, employs revolutionary technology to ensure that the Regera tows the same path.

Motivating the Regera is a 5-liter dry-sump twin-turbo V8 that combines with three electric motors to provide 1500 hp and 1475 lb-ft of torque. With power delivered through a direct-drive transmission, it clocks 62 mph in 2.8 seconds and has a maximum speed of 251 mph.

5 Lightning LS-218 (218 MPH)

Built in America by Lightning Motorcycle, the Lightning LS-218 is an ultra-fast electric bike that has been in production since 2014. A 150kw+10500 rpm electric motor powered either by a 12, 15, or 20kWh battery pack supplies enough juice to shoot the LS-218 to the top of our superbike list.

Churning out 200 hp and 168 lb-ft of torque, they send the LS-218 to 60 mph in 2.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 218 mph. This has made the $38,888 "bolt of lightning" the fastest street-legal production motorcycle in the world.

4 Kawasaki Ninja H2(209mph)

The Kawasaki Ninja H2 is an awe-inspiring supercharged superbike that took the world by storm when it was revealed in 2014. Power for the 2021 Ninja H2 is provided by a 998cc supercharged I-4 engine that delivers 228 hp and 104.9 lb-ft.

Assisted by a fine collection of electronic rider aids, the Ninja H2 accelerates to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds and has a top speed that exceeds 209 mph. With pricing starting at $29,500, it features launch control, an anti-lock braking system, transition control, and lots more.

3 Kawasaki ZH2 (200+MPH)

Relatively new to the scene, the Kawasaki ZH2 uses the same supercharged engine that powers the Ninja H2 and the Ninja H2R. The 998cc supercharged 4-cylinder engine delivers an output of 200 hp and 101 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed transmission.

To deliver an optimal riding experience the ZH2 comes with features like integrated riding modes, cruise control, and an antilock braking system. The 2021 ZH2 is reasonably priced at $17,500 and can hit 60 mph in less than 3 seconds and has a maximum speed of over 200 mph.

2 Ducati Panigale V4R(198 mph)

Latest in the lineup of the popular Ducati Panigale V4, the Panigale V4R is undoubtedly the most powerful of them all. The 998cc I-4 engine makes 217 hp and 83 lb-ft of torque in its standard version, and 231 hp with the optional racing kit.

Although it "crawls" from 0-60 mph in about 3 seconds, it clears the quarter-mile in 9.95 seconds at an insane 159 mph. In a true demonstration of impressive top-end power, it clocks 180 mph in 13.54 seconds and attains a maximum speed of 198 mph.

1 Ducati Superleggera V4 (199 MPH)

Ducati brings experience to the fore with the Superleggera V4 which is built with the finest space-age materials and loaded with cutting-edge technology. Due to the extensive use of lightweight materials for parts, the Superleggera V4 tips the scales at 336 pounds with the racing kit.

The 998cc V4 engine powering it churns out 234 hp and 87.7 lb-ft of torque giving it extraordinary power to weight ratio. With such power on tap, it clocks 60 mph in about 2 seconds and has a maximum speed of 299 mph.
