After over a decade away from the market, Hummer is finally back in business, and it's better than ever. The General Motors-owned brand has been revived as a model line for GMC, with two new cars on the way. The first of those, the Hummer Pickup, will be available to customers from Fall 2021 as a 2022 model year car. The second, the SUV will follow shortly after, being available from the 2024 model year.

Well, forget everything you think you know about Hummers, as the new model is a very long way from that stereotype while still keeping many of the capabilities that so many owners loved from the original trucks. Let's take a look at what's in store for buyers of this new breed of Hummer, and see just how radical this re-invention of the brand has been.

8 Three Electric Motors

The biggest and most instantly noticeable change to the Hummer is that it's no longer the gas guzzler it used to be. Its rumbling gasoline engine is long gone and in its place is a silent set of electric motors. Anyone worried that the new truck won't pack the same punch as the old one can rest easy, though. GM estimates that those electric motors should have a combined power output of up to 1,000 hp, and will come with a range of up to 300 miles. Those are some crazy numbers, and the brand says it's all possible thanks to their Ultium battery system, which integrates batteries into the main body, allowing for a cutting-edge double-stacked configuration.

7 Watts To Freedom Mode

In order to make the most of the Hummer's unrivaled power output, GM has incorporated a launch control mode called Watts To Freedom, which channels the batteries' immense power into short acceleration bursts. With this mode engaged, the truck will leap from 0-60 in just 3 seconds, which is on par with many supercars. Engaging the mode also triggers a "pre-launch countdown", which lowers the Hummer by two inches and displays animations on the interior screens. It's built solely for fun, and it represents a massive about-turn from the brand. The previous generation of Hummers might have been adapted from military vehicles, but the new trucks are built from the ground up with consumers in mind.

6 Rear-Wheel Steering

Another focus for GM when designing the new Hummers was making it easier to live with every day. Older generations were very capable off-road, but their huge turning circles and cumbersome handling counted against them in urban areas. To fix this, new Hummers now come with rear-wheel steering, which cuts the turning radius down to a mere 11.3 meters. For comparison, that's less than the much smaller Ford Mustang Mach-E. It also enables a new feature called Crab Walk, where both sets of wheels can be angled parallel so the truck can effectively "walk" at an angle diagonal to its body. Those two features combined should make city driving and parking in tight spaces a whole world easier than with an older Hummer.

5 A Focus On The Interior

Another notorious weakness on the old Hummers was their interiors, as they were quite basic and dated compared to their rivals. This time around, GM hired creative agency Perception to get things just right. The agency is best known for their work on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so they were the perfect team to design the tech-heavy, futuristic interior that Hummer was looking for. The fit and finish of the interior also seems to be leagues above the older trucks, and exactly what buyers would come to expect from a $100,000+ vehicle.

4 Autonomous Driving Tech

Taking things one step further than just making the Hummer easy to drive, GM has also implemented a new version of Super Cruise. Up until now, that technology has mostly been reserved for Cadillacs, but it's coming to both the pickup and SUV versions of the Hummer. It features over 200,000 miles of enabled roads and allows drivers to let the car do most of the work for them. Super Cruise will automatically change lanes when it needs to, and it'll keep an optimal speed depending on the traffic around it. It's a very clever piece of kit that's received a lot of praise from reviewers in Cadillac models, and with GM's new enhancements the Hummer's Super Cruise should be even smoother.

3 More Versatility

Talking of smooth, previous generations of the truck weren't known for their on-road refinement. It was a side effect of being derived from military vehicles, but it meant that older Hummers lacked the refinement of, say, a Range Rover or a G Wagen. The problem wasn't lost on GM, who have taken great care to ensure that the new models have just as much on-road composure as any of their similarly priced rivals. There are also cameras and sensors placed all over the vehicle so the driver can see exactly what's on the road around them.

2 Even More Off-Road Capable

The truck may now be great on the road, but it's still an absolute monster on every other terrain too. During the truck's unveiling, GM reported that the Hummer will be able to ford two feet of water and climb 60 percent grades in both forward and reverse. That's in addition to being able to scale verticals of up to 18 inches. The old Hummers were all very capable on all surfaces, but this new generation takes that capability to the next level and beyond.

1 High-End Brand Collaborations

General Motors might be one of the world's biggest automakers, but to get the Hummer EV just right, they enlisted several key partners, all of whom are experts in their field. It's a significant departure from the thinking of the earlier trucks, where most of the parts and design elements were kept in-house. The biggest example of this new philosophy is probably the brand's collaboration with Bose for the sound system for the cabin. The system has been custom-designed by Bose for the optimum sound quality in every part of the interior, and it's all controlled via the center console which uses the Unreal Gaming Engine for its graphics. It's just a small example of the lengths that GM is willing to go to make sure the new models are the best products in Hummer's history so far. They may be a big departure from the brand's previous ethos, but they're shaping up to be some of the best electric SUVs out there, period.
