A long time has passed since the pickups were used only by the working class people living on farms in the United States. And although there are still certain stereotypes surrounding pickup drivers, there is no doubt that the times have changed and with them, pickup trucks have changed as well. As we look at the newest pickups and their price tags, it becomes even more obvious that even base trucks have gone above and beyond merely utilitarian design and engineering—luxurious amenities have entered into the picture in a big way.

Luxury trucks aren’t exactly a new thing, though. They have been around for quite some time now, but every year, we see more and more of them as the demand gets bigger. The pickup is simply no longer just a working vehicle. In fact, recent market research points to the fact that it is slowly becoming the new family vehicle, as more and more city dwellers opt for a truck to haul the kids around. More and more automakers from all around the world have decided to dip their toes into the pickup market and while some are pretty successful at that, we have seen some pretty unimpressive results as well. To put it simply, the quality of some of the vehicles out there simply doesn’t match the high price tag attached to them.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at 10 pricey pickup trucks that aren’t worth a dime and 10 that are worth every penny!

19 Worth It: 2018 Ford F-150 King Ranch

AutoFarm Price Ford

If there was ever a classic American pickup, it was the Ford F-150. We have seen so many versions of this truck over the years, it is almost impossible to remember all of them, but one thing we know for sure – the good old F-150 has never failed to deliver a solid package at a reasonable price.

Luckily for fans of the line, the new 2018 Ford F-150 King Ranch is no exception.

It comes with a pretty high price tag of $64,025 but it comes with a whole bunch of other stuff as well. From the 5.0-liter, 385-horsepower V-8 to the newest and coolest high-tech features, the new F-150 has it all.

18 Not Worth It: Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition

autoTrader.ca

First of all, let’s just say that Toyota has proven itself to be quite a competitor in the pickup truck market and there have been some pretty great and reliable vehicles among their offerings so far.

So, is the Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition a bad pickup? No, it is not. However, is it worth $50,000? Absolutely not!

To be precise, the starting price of this vehicle is $47,380 which is way too high an entry cost in comparison with competitors in the same class. The Tundra is simply not up to the challenge for several reasons: the fuel consumption is too high, its maximum towing is rated at only 10,500 pounds, and it has a max payload of only 2,060 pounds.

17 Worth It: 2017 Ram 1500 Limited

truckindo.win

One could argue that it depends on how big of a Ram fan you are, but we think that this rugged beast is totally worth every penny even though the MSRP is set at a whopping $64,770. So what is so awesome about this vehicle? Glad you asked. It is equipped with a 3.0-liter, V6 EcoDiesel and an 8-Speed automatic 8HP70 transmission, and the ride is so incredibly smooth you will want to stay on the road forever. The design is also pretty eye-catching with a nice modern touch added to the standard, bold Ram 1500 elements. And yes, the price is high but not too high for what this vehicle has to offer.

16 Not Worth It: Lincoln Mark LT

ZombieDrive

We are waiting for the new Lincoln Mark LT to hit the market and we are expecting it to be pretty pricey. Since we don’t have the definite price and specs yet, let’s talk more about Mark LTs that we have seen in the past, and not so long ago.

This truck was first introduced to the market in 2005 and it was basically a more luxurious ad more expensive version of the Ford F-150.

However, that wasn’t the major problem with this vehicle. Apparently, there were some engine problems reported by numerous users and it turned out this vehicle wasn’t as reliable as people expected it to be.

15 Worth It: 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD High Country

Caraganza

You have every right not to agree with us, but we would say that the new 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD High Country is probably one of the best-looking trucks on the market. At the starting price of $68,455, however, it is not exactly cheap, but it seems to be worth every penny of the sticker! It is powered by the monstrous Duramax 6.6-liter, V8 turbodiesel engine combined with an Allison transmission that delivers 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. It can easily tow 13,000 pounds so we can call it a true workhorse that not only looks amazing but gets the job done every time.

14 Not Worth It: Volkswagen Amarok

Wikipedia

Volkswagen waited a long time before introducing their first pickup truck to the market, and we have to say that the result is pretty underwhelming. Yes, it is immediately obvious that VW wanted to bring a new touch of class to the classic pickup design, but they obviously didn’t entirely think it through. Buyers have reported experiencing difficulties with parking due to the impractical size of the truck. Another reported issue was the uncomfortable suspension. Taking into the consideration the fact that the prices range from $38,490 to $71,990, we have to say that this truck simply isn’t worth buying.

13 Worth It: 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD High Country

YouTube

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD High Country is THE truck if you need a practical truck to get the job done. According to Thedrive.com, “This monster Duramax 6.6.-Liter Turbodiesel V-8 will pull 20,000 pounds behind its dually rear axle. How does it do that? Well, it generates 445-horsepower and nearly 1,000 pound-feet of torque. That's how.”

You have to admit that those are some pretty crazy numbers.

However, the power like that also comes with a pretty high price tag, in this case, it is $69,065. So is it worth it? Absolutely! Not only is this vehicle a top-notch performer, but it is a real looker as well. Both the interior and the exterior have been designed to perfection and we can hardly find anything that we don’t like about this truck.

12 Not Worth It: Mercedes-Benz X-Class

CAR Magazine

Ok, let’s just start by saying that Mercedes-Benz is an admirable car manufacturer and they have proven time and time again that they know how to make a top-notch vehicle, so many times in the past that we can’t even count them. That being said, the X-Class is the exact opposite from everything we hope a Mercedes vehicle could be. It is the first proper pickup truck that this automaker has put on the market yet it bears a huge resemblance to the Nissan Navara. But that is not its biggest problem. In fact, this truck is significantly slower than most of the competition and it obviously wasn’t built for real off-road rides.

11 Worth It: 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali

YouTube

Priced at $70,485, the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali is pretty far from being cheap. However, we are happy to say that this beast of a car is actually worth it. According to theThedrive.com, “At this level of investment—about what you'd spend on a Tesla Model S—you want something special, and where the Denali really shines is the new satin-smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. Combined with the 5.3-Liter EcoTec3 V8 engine, it rockets to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds.” Apart from the top-notch performance, we have to add that the design is also right on spot.

10 Not Worth It: 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

Toyota of Orlando

Midsize pickup have their fair share of fans and although Ford and Ram abandoned the market in 2011, Toyota is still going strong with new designs for their midsize pickup models (or at least improving the existing ones).

Unfortunately, according to a new Digital Trends’ review, the new 2018 Toyota Tacoma isn’t exactly the best vehicle we have seen come out of Toyota's factories.

Apparently, the infotainment is woefully outdated while the dark, compact interior is pretty underwhelming. In addition to that, the 2018 Tacoma TRD Pro comes with a price tag of nearly $50,000 and we simply don’t think it can compete with some of the other pickups in the same price range.

9 Worth It: 2017 Ford F-350 Platinum

YouTube

According to Edmunds, the 2017 Ford F-350 Platinum might be one of the best pickups you can buy if you need great hauling and towing capacities. Edmunds.com reports: “If you have the need to haul or tow heavy loads, the redesigned 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty should be at the top of your must-consider list. This heavy-duty pickup comes in variations from bare-bones work truck all the way up to decked-out luxury truck. Add improved ride and handling qualities and a slew of new high-tech features, and you have one of the best big pickups on the road.” Powered by a turbodiesel V8, this vehicle is a true beast both on and off the road.

8 Worth It: 2017 Ford F-250 Platinum

YouTube

The 2017 Ford F-250 Platinum is another luxury Ford pickup that we would absolutely love to try. Even at the high price of $78,205, we have to say that this vehicle is totally worth it. According to Thedrive.com, “Once you start shopping in the upper reaches of the Ford truck world, you start to glimpse the majesty that is the modern American luxury full-size pickup. The F-250 Platinum that we configured included a 6.7-Liter 4-valve Power Stroke diesel V-8, the new TorqShift 6-speed automatic transmission and an off-road package to match the 4X4 drive.” We have to add that both the exterior and the interior design are pretty impressive as well.

7 Not Worth It: 2017 Nissan Titan Platinum Reserve 4WD Crew Cab

CarGurus

With the price tag anywhere between $57,145 and $58,690, we have to say that the 2017 Nissan Titan Platinum Reserve 4WD Crew Cab simply isn’t worth the purchase.

We agree with Motor1.com’s conclusion that this is the most elegant rendition of the standard-duty Nissan Titan, but it still seems to fall short of the standards that some of the competitors put on the table.

Also, there aren’t that many options to choose from if you want to customize this truck a little bit more to your wishes. According to Motor1.com, “Options are minimal and include an off-road package, DVD entertainment system, and an electronic tailgate lock.”

6 Worth It: Ford F-450 Super Duty Limited

Autoweek

The new Ford F-450 Super Duty Limited is one of the most expensive pickup trucks you can find on today’s market, but even with the price tag of  around $100,000, we still think this vehicle is totally worth it. According to Thedrive.com, “Properly configured, the $100,000 price tag comes with a 'satin chrome' grille, panoramic moonroof with a retractable shade, seats that warm you, cool you down and massage you like a boss. There is copious real wood trim, a 10-speaker sound system and Sync3 out the wazoo. You want towing capacity? Go ahead and tow six of those little fancy Mercedes S-Classes, buddy: You have plenty of power.”

5 Not Worth It: Nissan Titan XD Diesel Platinum Reserve 4WD Crew Cab

Truck Trend

Now, we are not saying that the Nissan Titan XD Diesel Platinum Reserve 4WD Crew Cab is a bad vehicle. In fact, everything points out to the fact that it is a pretty solid pickup. Motor1.com reports: “The Nissan Titan XD is the heavy-duty alternative in the automaker’s pickup line, with the Platinum Reserve models being the most opulently equipped iterations.  A 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 engine puts 310-horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque to the pavement.  Options are nominal, and include a bed utility package and a rear-seat entertainment system.” The problem is that for the price, which ranges between $64,455 and $85,800, you can get an even better pickup than this from another manufacturer.

4 Worth It: Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn 4WD Mega Cab

Greenbrier Dodge of Chesapeake

The Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn 4WD Mega Cab is not only a high-performance pickup truck but it is also as comfortable as they get. It is packed with amazing features and even though the prices are between $61,990 and $70,440, we would still say it is worth the money. According to Motor1.com, “Think of it as a limousine with a 6.4-foot cargo bed attached at the rear. Its standard 6.4-liter V8 engine packs a 370-horsepower punch, but the real muscle comes from the optional 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel.” The Mega Cab version is even larger than the Crew Cab, which makes this pickup one of the roomiest ones you can find.

3 Not Worth It: 2018 Fiat Fullback Cross

Driveandride.com

The 2018 Fiat Fullback Cross was presented as a special edition at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show but we didn’t notice very many special-edition-like improvements. This vehicle still looks much like a slightly changed version of Mitsubishi L-200.

The standard version has only a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder, common-rail turbodiesel engine with a top speed of 111 mph.

Also, the 2018 Fiat Fullback Cross comes in only one version for now, which is a double cab layout with four doors. And while it hasn’t been tested enough for us to say whether it is truly good or bad, the fact that the Fiat 500L was voted one of the most unreliable vehicles by Consumer Reports polling makes us a bit skeptical.

2 Worth It: Ford F-150 Limited 4WD SuperCrew

CarGurus

The Ford F-150 Limited 4WD SuperCrew isn’t the priciest vehicle on our list, with a sticker ranging anywhere between $65,240 and $70,565 depending on options, but it is still pretty pricey for a truck of this size. So is it worth it? It definitely is. According to Motor1.com, “The Limited is trimmed in rich leather, with a rich looking and feeling interior. A surprisingly energetic 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine comes standard with 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Options include various equipment packages, bedliners, accessories, and many of the latest accident avoidance safety systems.” It comes with everything you’ll ever need and more, while it also looks amazing on the road.

1 Not Worth It: 2019 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition

Via Auto Super Car

All in all, the 2019 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition is a nice looking vehicle, but the price seems a bit too high at nearly $45,000. According to Edmunds, the biggest cons include sensitive driver aids that can be distracting, a frustrating touchscreen audio and navigation interface, the fact that the 5,000-pound maximum tow rating drops to 3,500 pounds on front-wheel-drive versions, and the fact that it lacks low-range gearing and adequate underbody clearance like other, more typical, trucks. On the other hand, it offers a comfortable ride in a handsomely finished, spacious crew cab. Even though it is a solid vehicle, we still wouldn’t spend $43,420 for the most expensive version.
