Most of us would probably agree that Tesla are the kings of the EV hill at the moment. Elon Musk might be a controversial figure, but his company has produced some pretty incredible cars. From the Model 3 to the Model S Plaid. Their charging architecture is almost unrivalled, and you get cars with great space and great legroom. But they are certainly not the only players in the EV world right now. Not by a long way at all.

One company that is coming for that crown in Polestar. Polestar is the electric division of Volvo. And the Polestar 1 and 2 are two of the very best EVs currently available. The company has worked wonders with these cars, and there is plenty more to come from the brand too. Enter the Polestar 5. This car was recently shown off in public for the first time at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, and even wrapped in its camouflage livery, it looked every bit as good as the previous two Polestars did. And it is coming to take the Tesla Model S’s lunch money in a big way.

What We Know About The Model 5 So Far

Of course, we don’t have all the information on the Polestar 5 right now. But we do have some details. The car is surely set to become the new halo model of the Polestar brand, and it has the punch to really take on the Tesla Model S, and the likes of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S as well. Thanks to a dual-motor setup, this remarkable new car produces a brilliant 872 hp. In the context of everyday power, that is more than any of us will ever need. But in the context of beating their rivals, Polestar have produced a car with insane levels of power.

It is important to not that it can easily beat the Taycan Turbo S already. That car can only deliver 761 hp in short bursts of overboost. So that is one of its biggest rivals out of the way already. The Polestar 5 is heading our way in 2024, so we have a couple of years to wait still, but the early signs from this car are very promising. And we will hopefully soon get to see it without the camouflage wrapping.

Taking On The Tesla Model S

Of course, we know how much power the Model S Plaid has from Tesla. This insane EV has 1,019 hp with a 0-62 time of 2.1 seconds and a top speed of 200 mph. Of course, that is a bit of a chunk more than what the Polestar 5 will offer. But what about the standard Model S? Well, if we look at the Model S Performance, that produces 778 hp. So in that area, the Polestar 5 has another of its key rivals soundly beaten. And by a big margin as well.

The Polestar will also sit on an 800v architecture and its two electric motors are of course attached to the front and the rear of the car. Officially, the Polestar 5 is a four-door GT car from the company, and what lies under the hood is what the company calls a “top of the line electric powertrain”. No doubt we will get the full details on this as we get closer to the official launch. Polestar has also said that the bonded aluminum platform the car sits on is stiffer than a two-seat sports or supercar, which will offer a pretty interesting driving experience for users.

Can It Really Beat Out Tesla?

While beating Tesla will be tricky, Polestar already have a lot of things going for them. First of all, in the styling department. Tesla lets be honest look a bit boring, and the Model X is just a giant blob on wheels. Polestar offers a more refreshing style set, while also maintain a level of subtlety about their looks that might make you go “what is that?” as you see one cruising down the street. Polestar also offer up perhaps another level of luxury over Tesla, and we are yet to hear of any build quality complaints, unlike with some of the panel gaps on some Teslas.

A Big Deal For Polestar

What is also refreshing is that the Polestar 5 has lost very little styling compared to the rather cool looking Precept Concept that we saw back in 2020. Given that so many concept cars lose a lot of their styling, the fact the Model 5 has lost only the most outlandish features is quite refreshing. Polestar have truly knocked it out of the park with their previous models. No doubt they will do the same with the Polestar 5 as well.
