Bubba Wallace took home the NASCAR Cup at Talladega, becoming the only African-American driver to win the race in over five decades. Wendell Scott, a NASCAR Hall of Famer, is the only other black driver who last won a race in Jacksonville in 1963.

The YellaWood 500 got delayed due to a heavy downpour as mother nature struck again, and NASCAR had to stop several times throughout the day. Wallace drove through an accident and made it to the leading position five laps before the second stoppage. Officials sought to dry out the track for more than 45 minutes, yet, up against the setting sun and the rain giving no sign of ceasing, the race got red-flagged after 117 laps, and Wallace, driver of the No. 23 Toyota, in the lead.

Wallace wept in tears when he got back to his car parked at 23 Toyota stand. Wallace took home his first win within the Cup Series in 143 starts and his first race with 23XI Racing, the Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin co-owned team, which is just starting its first season in the Cup Series.

In June 2020, at Talladega, NASCAR discovered a noose in the garage stall assigned to Wallace. Unfortunately, they only found it a week after NASCAR had banned the Confederate flag from its events on Wallace's advice. The FBI conducted an investigation and discovered that the knot was there to pull on the garage door, and Wallace was not the victim of hatred. The whole industry gathered around him, though, and stood in solidarity with Wallace before the race at the front of the grid.
