Ask any group of gearheads what automotive manufacturer looks headed for the stars and the answer, collectively, will probably come in the form of the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate. With clean designs all around, exciting offerings like the Stinger GT, and luxury sedans from the Genesis subsidiary spinoff brand, the Koreans clearly took the 21st century by storm by building mightily upon the famous 10-year warranties that made their 1990s products a step beyond the cheapest commuters available. Meanwhile, Nissan wants to get back into top form with the new Z, plus a complete design language overhaul of Infiniti shown by the newly unveiled QX60 SUV. But whether Nissan can return to the glory days of the Skyline GT-R remains a serious question—almost as serious as whether a tuned 1996 R-33 can compete with a lightly tuned 2021 Genesis G70 3.3T four-door. Luckily, the maniacs at Hoonigan delivered the answer with the newest "This vs. That" video posted to YouTube.

A Luxury Korean Commuter Challenges Godzilla

Only a few years ago, the thought that any Hyundai or Kia could hope to compete with a JDM legend nicknamed Godzilla would seem absolutely absurd. And yet, in 2021, things have clearly changed and the Genesis G70 represents a legitimate effort to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi in terms of exterior design, interior amenities, and also performance.

The Skyline, however, steps up to the line equipped with a legendary RB26DETT inline-six benefiting from the big Garrett snail visible above (plus the transcendental rainbow-galaxy engine covers that probably add horsepower while trimming weight significantly). The Hoonigan video isn't quite certain how much power this eye-catching GT-R puts out, but it's probably around 500 or 600 horses, with power sent to the rear wheels only through a five-speed stick shift.

Hyundai's Impressive Genesis G70 3.3T

The Genesis G70 in 3.3T trim, however, would have put out 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, but this sedan's 500 ponies belies the relatively sedate engine bay seen above (other than the massive cone filter serving as a quick cue that something might not remain quite stock here). With an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, however, the G70 tips the scales at 4,000 pounds in contrast to the Skyline's 3,400. Watch the video to see whether Hyundai's luxurious sedan can manage to get a jump on and hold off Godzilla thanks to a bit of aftermarket work.
