The saga around the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar looks to finally be coming to an end, with the news that the hypercar will enter production in 2022. The delays surrounding the Mercedes-Benz car have been well documented, such as the issues with the F1-based engine, and various engineering issues. However, since the announcement of the car around four years ago, various other hypercars from other manufacturers are now out there, some with Formula 1 tech themselves, and there is now the danger that the AMG One isn't quite the technological marvel that it once was. This begs the question whether the car will be worth the wait.

The AMG One was first revealed back in 2017 and caught the attention of the world with the fact that its engine came from what Mercedes used in its 2016 Formula 1 car. The company stated that it would be a limited run of 275 units, to maintain exclusivity. Production was originally slated for 2019 but issues in adapting the F1 technology to the road caused several delays, such as getting the engine to comply with emissions standards. Deliveries should have taken place this year, but according to Autocar, Mercedes has written to its customers letting them know production will commence by the middle of 2022. This lines up with recent footage emerging that shows the hypercar testing at the Nurburgring.

The AMG One Might Not Be Worth The Wait

The car finally looking set to reach production is great news for us and Mercedes customers. But it does beg the question whether the AMG One is going to be worth the wait. When we first saw the car in 2017, the idea of cramming F1-style technology and performance levels into super/hypercars was relatively novel. However, since then we have had the Ferrari SF90 with similar hybrid tech and performance, and there's still the upcoming Aston Martin Valkyrie to consider.

No Longer The Novelty It Once Was

With other such high-performance cars from the likes of McLaren and Lamborghini coming along, the AMG One is in danger of becoming something quite normal. Plus, the automotive world has changed since 2017. Electrification is, right now, the way forward. Even for Mercedes. Hybrid hypercars and supercars will soon not fit into the way the world thinks. While it's great that the AMG One is finally on its way, it could be coming just a couple of years too late.
