Among the many debates raging in the auto community today is whether roof scoops serve any practical purpose beyond merely enhancing a supercar's aesthetics up top. YouTube channel Daily Driven Exotics isn't afraid to explore this topic, covering ones that adorn McLaren supercars in particular, thanks to a recent vlog from Beverly Hills in California. There, entrepreneur Damon Fryer and friend Dave Coulter had a chance to drop by an exotic dealership where the topic first came up, and later expanded on the issue further during a meetup with fellow friends and supercar owners.

How Much Does The MSO Roof Scoop Cost?

If there's one thing that should discourage supercar owners from wanting a roof scoop in the first place, it's the expensive price tag. While the feature looks simple and straightforward enough, the price is far from it. Fryer and Coulter start the video off with a trip to Lamborghini Newport Beach at its new location in Irvine, California, where they spend time checking out various rides—including the incredible McLaren Speedtail—and discuss various auto-related topics.

After Fryer mentions that Coulter needs a roof scoop, the latter replies with a lament: "We talked about this. It's like $80,000 to get it done."

McLaren Special Operations can add this feature to 570S, 600LT, and 720S models. What Coulter wanted to know is whether adding the roof scoop increases the car's value, and if so, by how much? According to the dealership's rep, it's a safe investment.

What Adding A Roof Scoops Does For McLaren Supercars

While the issue of how much a roof scoop costs and whether it raises the value of a McLaren remains murky, what's less debatable are the sound benefits it brings to a McLaren's interior. Later on, during a meetup with other supercar owners (DDE showed up in a 1-of-1 Supercharged Huracan Aperta), a McLaren 620R rolls up to the party. Coulter hops in the passenger seat for a ride, and quickly discovers one huge upside to having a roof scoop. After some good accelerations, Coulter raises his hands up as if in surrender and says he wants a roof scoop now. "Yeah," said Reggie from the driver's seat. "It sounds like Darth Vader up there."

If there's one positive to having a roof scoop that's immediately apparent, sounding like a Dark Lord of the Sith from Star Wars sure makes a compelling case.
