So, did you hear the one about the Canadian supercar collector who wanted to make a big impression in southern California? He starts out by getting an already-awesome McLaren 720S customized into a McLaren 720 GTR, then heads down to the U.S., where he invites a high-rolling luxury car buff like Manny Khoshbin to take an exclusive ride in his nifty four-wheeler. That's exactly what Calgary-based auto buff Damon Fryer did during a recent jaunt in the Golden State, but as this video released Monday demonstrates, the punch line is a rather hot and fiery one delivered at his expense.

Several One-Off Parts Built This GTR

Fryer's a dude who got rich by finding solutions to getting things done his way, with a gift of gab that can not only rake enough dough to start a supercar collection, it can also persuade a cop from giving him a speeding ticket. And if he's loaded enough to drive around in a 720 GTR, naturally he'll get the ear of Khoshbin without any effort at all. Actually, Khoshbin, who has a few pricey McLarens in his garage, is pretty stoked to experience being in this GTR for the first time in his life.

The GTR was built at Fast Track Auto Body in Richmond, British Columbia on Canada's west coast, using a McLaren 720S as its base. The team added a slew of one-off parts, such as a rear wing and a full-carbon fiber hood from a Vorsteiner kit, Dymag forged carbon wheel barrels and a center exhaust assembly from Unobtanium. The engine delivers about 820 hp, although Fryer wants it tweaked to kick out a thousand.

With Fryer at the wheel and Khoshbin as his eager passenger, things are going great on the road, until the GTR backfires, pieces of the car shoot out from the back, and flames flicker beneath the rear-mounted engine. Almost immediately, Fryer says "I think we blew a turbo." They immediately pull over to the median and shut down the McLaren and see what's happening in the back as smoke wafts from the engine. They also notice a lengthy trail of oil on the pavement and believe pieces of the heat shield were what the supercar expelled.

It's not looking good. Fearing that flames will engulf the car, Khsohbin frantically looks for a fire extinguisher before dashing off to purchase one. Meanwhile, a couple of people in Fryer's entourage pour water on the back of the McLaren to mitigate any further fire damage.

It's Likely The McLaren's Turbo

While everyone waits for a tow truck, the boys hunker down to figure out what went wrong. It's almost unanimous that a blown turbo was the culprit, although other theories like a blown motor and a blown oil line are also thrown around. Unfortunately, Fryer doesn't reveal the source of the fire and breakdown. And then there's Khoshbin who's still hankering for another ride in the McLaren, hopefully a trouble-free trip.
