The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach has just taken place as the IndyCar season finale. It's one of the most prestigious events on the IndyCar calendar outside of the Indy 500, and this year the Acura NSX Type S, the final edition of the NSX supercar, was the chosen pace car for this marquee event. While there, Acura took the production version of the Acura NSX out on the track to put the car through its paces, and they came away with the official production car lap record on the Long Beach circuit with the NSX Type S.

The 2022 Acura NSX Type S

The Type S NSX is the final hurrah for the current generation of NSX, and it looks like the name won’t be back for a long time, if at all. The 2022 NSX Type S gets its power from a twin-turbocharged V6 engine that has the same turbos as the NSX TT3 Evo race car, and all in this car produces 600 hp. The front of the car is much more aggressively styled than the standard NSX, and this edition of the car will only have 350 units in total made.

The Lap Record The NSX Set

The Acura NSX Type S had Wayne-Taylor Racing IMSA driver Ricky Taylor at the wheel, who can be regularly seen driving the team's Acura ARX-05. At the wheel of the Acura NSX, he set a lap time of 1:32:784 around the famous circuit. To put that into context, Taylor was nearly three seconds quicker than the previous record. That record was set in 2019 by Sports Car Club of America Hall-of-Famer Peter Cunningham who drove a 2019 Acura NSX around the circuit to give a lap time of 1:35:663. Taylor showed just how much quicker the final edition of the NSX is over the 2019 model.

Acura released an onboard video of Taylor completing the lap of the Long Beach circuit. As you can imagine, Taylor did not hold back driving the car and pushed it as far to its limits as he dared, with the car looking like it was handling superbly in the IMSA driver's hands. Acura says that the NSX Type S will deliver an emotional driving experience for those behind the wheel, and the hope is that the Type S will prove to be a fitting finale for one of the most popular supercar names in the world.
