For a car that was designed to be a practical coupe, the El Camino certainly has withstood a reputation for being an odd duck in the Chevrolet lineup. Created to combine the vibe of driving in a sedan while sporting a rear flatbed to carry around items far too large for a trunk, the El Camino sported a look that didn't go over well with detractors more accustomed to conventional designs. To them, a car was a car and a pickup was a pickup and never a twain shall meet, a mindset that was one reason why production ceased on the El Camino in 1987. But digital artist Oscar Vargas came up with an idea. How would an El Camino have been received if it were a four-door? That's the challenge he posed with his rendering that hit Instagram on Tuesday.

El Camino Subject Had A 450-HP V-8

For his rendering, Vargas chose the 1970 SS El Camino, which was among the more recognizable and powerful among the car-truck hybrid set. And when it came to power among the SS pack, the 1970 rollout topped them all with a 7.4-liter V-8 that could generate as much as 450 horsepower. In the case of a radical rendering, it seems that an artist should approach the subject from a position of strength.

It didn't look like Vargas played around with any other elements of the El Camino, such as altering the grille, headlights, making the side mirrors more aerodynamic, or even adding a front spoiler for the sake of visual appeal. All he did was expand the middle section, in much the same way a Dodge Ram cab would be doubled in size to add some rear passenger room.

Tougher To Parallel Park

Vargas, whose work has earned him more than 34,000 followers on social media, has received more than 1,500 likes within the space of a day after the rendering was posted.

"Someone needs to make this," remarked one follower. "Great work, but man that’s... uh... different," added another. One respondent liked the design, but felt that parallel parking would be far more difficult due to the added length of the concept.

From Two Doors To Four

Looking at his other work, Vargas has worked on some ambitious renderings, such as adding a skirt and a monster intake to the front of a Chevy Nova, which made it look tougher. He's also created a sacrilegious Ferrari 296GTB rendering with a front engine. But while Vargas could have really gone to town on this El Camino, perhaps he just wanted to satisfy a curiosity of what it would look like with four doors. For the sake of comparison, an image of the original two-door model has been included.
