BMW has a name in making desirable driver's cars but when the BMW E36 M3 Compact Concept was unveiled, they outdid themselves. This was a compact sports coupe that was way ahead of time in terms of ideology and character. It was too good for the roads, that BMW's M Division didn't work to push the M3 Compact past the prototype stage.

We all know about what happens when engineers and motorsport maniacs are given full freedom while doing a project. Gems like these pop up that make a lasting mark among enthusiasts and provides a base for elusive new cars for the road. The 90s was a wild time for ambition and sheer performance among car-makers. This compact humble-looking car pumped out over 300 HP and mind you, it weighed less than the BMW E36 M3 Coupe. All of this was in 1996 and clearly, people were not prepared to embrace this monstrosity.

It is because of the BMW M3 Compact Concept that we can enjoy cars like the BMW 1 Series M Coupe and the BMW M2 CS. This concept is what familiarized us with the fact that compact can be ferocious and fun; that sacrificing comfort and space for a wide grin was the way to the heart! This car was so desirable that it had enthusiasts were dying and pleading BMW to produce it.

The 1996 BMW M3 Compact Concept gave us a very early peek at the hot-hatch future. With over 300 HP and weighing just 2,866 pounds. it was too powerful and scary for the time.

It's very frustrating when automakers stick to making one-offs of such drool-worthy machines! Just one BMW M3 Compact Concept was ever made officially and it has even come on the tracks now and then for events. This was a machine that was built of pure passion and love. Taking a no-nonsense and comfortable 3-Series Coupe and converting it into a monstrosity this hardcore was a very bold move back in the day. It was way too ahead of its time!

The mad engineers at BMW M stuffed in the meaty 3.2-liter inline-6 motor from the iconic E36 M3 Coupe. The result was a shorter and lighter car with 321 HP and a 5-Speed manual gearbox sending all the unadulterated power to its rear wheels. The engine was not tweaked in any way but the impressive feature was in weight savings which made all the difference.

The M3 Compact Concept's extreme desirability comes from the fact that it's a short car! Loads of performance and lower weight are always a grin-worthy recipe. And in 1996, this made it a bold car. While many thought of the M3 Compact Concept to have a shorter wheelbase, but it had the same wheelbase as the standard BMW 3-Series Compact of the time.

The weight savings were done by shortening the body by 9 inches and using aggressive materials on the inside (which we will come to later). It weighed in at just 2,866 pounds. This made the M3 Compact shockingly lighter by 330 pounds than the E36 M3 Coupe. So, all the dynamic advantages of the already potent chassis and added weight savings made it a car that was made for FUN!

The M3 Compact Concept came with a slew of aggressive design cues to differentiate it from the boring 3-Series Compact which was for the record, very much unloved by fans. But the M3 Compact managed to pack a different aura that subtly sprinkled aggression into the simple design.

The cues were very subtle that you would need a keen eye to differentiate it apart from the standard 3-Series Compact at first glance. But the wheels and their quad-exhaust tip layout gave it away. And there was a subtle lip-spoiler integrated onto the trunk lid. But the serious bits were on the inside where weight saving was done quite aggressively.

The minimalistic interior helped BMW achieve a power-to-weight ratio that was mind-boggling back then, and still is! It had lighter racing seats from Recaro and also a rigid roll bar. To make the cockpit aggressive and driver-centric, BMW took most of the dashboard from the previous E30 Series 3-Series. And this is also the prime area where there are actual differences between the E36 Compact Concept and its productions brothers. Related: 10 Things Everyone Forgot About The BMW M3

Jacob Polschak, the head of vehicle prototype building and workshops at BMW M Divison is the one who stated that the M3 Compact Concept can be regarded as the forefather of today's BMW M2. And he also stated that if BMW ever decided to give the green light for production then there would be a few notable down-grades and changes.

The engine would be detuned for a more comfortable driving approach. The major changes would be on the inside, which would gain more weight with added comfort and features. It was wise to not put such a gem of a machine to production. People were not quite ready for pleasurable yet uncomfortable cars back then!
