The Mazda RX-7 is one of the finest Japanese sports cars ever made. It’s different and quirky rotary engine may not have appealed to everyone, but it had its charm and it was also one of the best looking JDM cars of its time. But, many people unlock more from the RX-7 by changing its engine. And David Patterson, or ThatDudeInBlue, a YouTuber with over 1 million subscribers on the platform, has gone and reviewed TJ Hunt’s rather awesome fire-breathing RX-7, which has a slightly different engine inside it.

A New Rotary Engine

Whilst it may not be the original rotary engine in this RX-7, it is still a rotary engine. It is a special 13B 2 rotor engine imported in New Zealand before being fitted into this 1994 RX-7. David, ThatDudeInBlue, describes it as the baddest 13B you can buy on the market. You will know it's coming when you hear the tell-tale 'brap' and 'brap' from the enlarged intake ports (a process called "porting") at a stop light or just being idle. It’s good that this car. has stayed true to its rotary origins.

I’m sure you are reading this at home, watching the YouTube video linked to this article, and asking “why don’t you tell us the price?”. Well TJ wanted this to be the “most legit build”. And he certainly achieved that, but at quite the cost. Throwing in the cost of the engine, the shipping, and everything else, this project car cost a whopping $50,000. Yes, not 15…50k! The body kit and everything is from RE, and they had never had a customer order all of the parts at once!

Insane Sound

via YouTube

The sound is absolutely insane. This car shows just what a modified JDM car is capable of, and why so many people take to these cars for owning and just modifying. The RX-7, as David says, is very high maintenance. Whilst the NSX, Skylines, and Supra’s are expensive, they are not the worst to maintain. As David says, and as I am sure most of you will agree, you can put that down mainly to that rotary engine, it's vastly different from a regular engine. But as you can see from this car, the results of a well modified and maintained RX-7 can be pretty fantastic.
