XR-7 Cobra Jet Restored Through The Years And Looking Good
Sold new at Rohla Lincoln-Mercury of Albuquerque, New Mexico, this 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Cobra Jet became the seller’s property in 2001.
The listing didn’t reveal the condition the Cougar XR-7 Cobra Jet was in when the seller acquired it, but the classic car had to undergo a multi-year restoration to return the unit to a great condition.
According to the listing, the owner-seller had the Cougar XR-7 Cobra Jet disassembled in 2002, and then media-blasted, and repainted in its original color (Saxony Yellow).
The seller also replaced the car’s driver-side floor pan and hood.
This Cougar XR-7 Cobra Jet’s other features include a black hood stripe, a hood scoop, a black vinyl roof, and a power sunroof, as well as wing windows, a driver-side mirror, chrome front bumper guards, and hideaway headlights.
It rides on aluminum 15-inch Legendary wheels shod with raised-white-letter Cooper Cobra Radial G/T rubbers.

This vehicle is one of the 117 XR-7 Cougars built for the 1968 model year with the 428-4V Cobra Jet engine.
The car, however, now features an R-Code 428ci Cobra Jet V8 that was factory-rated at 335 hp of output and 440 lb-ft of torque.
This replacement engine – along with the replacement C6 three-speed automatic transmission – received an overhaul under current ownership.
In addition, this Cougar XR-7 Cobra Jet features a custom 31-spline Currie 9-inch limited-slip differential (with Torsen 3.00:1 gears).
The owner upgraded the suspension system with Eibach progressive rate front coil springs, KYB gas shocks, Caltracs and TCP sub-frame connectors, plus replacement front control arm assemblies.

Inside, this Cougar XR-7 Cobra Jet comes with reupholstered front bucket seats, rear bench, door panels, dashboard, and center console in black vinyl.
It also features a tilt-away wood-rimmed steering wheel, a 120-mph speedometer, an 8,000-rpm tachometer, and various gauges.
Moreover, this Cougar XR-7 Cobra Jet features a wood-look dashboard appliqué, an overhead console, a T-handle shift knob, and an aftermarket AM/FM cassette stereo.
The five-digit odometer has logged around 54,000 miles, around 200 miles were by the owner, its total mileage is unknown since it comes with a replacement engine.
