Acura’s handsome TLX has always been a bit of a mystery for a lot of car enthusiasts. Even though its lines and overall dimensions have been alluring and the model is not lacking for advanced technology, its underpowered status and mediocre driving dynamics have hampered its popularity and its sales. Acura makes perfectly wonderful SUV’s, but when it comes to sports sedans, it falls short of a lot of other carmakers in the category, and you would be hard-pressed to get your kicks in an Acura unless you opt for their mega-money supercar, the NSX.

Buffed Up

Acura has seen the writing on the wall and is determined to address its sports sedan deficiency syndrome. With the unveiling of the mesmerizing and highly desirable Type-S Concept Sedan last summer, our pulses were quickened and we started hoping (praying) that that captivating shape would make it to production in a powerful and technically capable car that would be worthy of the folks who produce the NSX. Well, if the rumors are to believed, our prayers may just be getting answered. The word on the streets is that the new TSX will be a wolf in wolf’s clothing, and will finally fortify Acura’s mediocre line up, at least when it comes to sports sedans.

The forthcoming 2021 Acura TLX will be based on a new platform, with all-new sheetmetal and presented in base and Type-S versions. The former will make do with the Honda Accord’s 2.0L turbo mill, coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission and available AWD. The Type S, however, significantly raises the stakes with a 3.0L turbocharged V6 that will produces a bunch more horses than the current 295-hp, 3.5L normally aspirated V6 can. We can expect the usual Acura high-tech gadgetry including the latest in Infotainment technology and driver assist features.

Worth the Wait

Acura (or more correctly, Honda) should be lauded for not deserting the sports sedan scene in favor of yet another SUV/Crossover. If we get anything remotely close to what is rumored, we are in for a treat in the way of an exciting and world-class sports sedan.
