Alfa Romeo has unveiled a pair of Nurburgring Editions for their two Quadrifoglio performance vehicles.
A few months ago, Alfa Romeo accomplished something incredible. They put test driver Fabio Francia in the front of a Stelvio Quadrifoglio, Alfa Romeo’s performance SUV, and told him to go around the legendary Nurburgring test track as fast as he could. He managed to complete a lap in the fastest time ever for a production SUV: seven minutes and 51.7 seconds.
A year before that, Alfa Romeo told another test driver to run around the Nurburgring in their performance four-door sedan, the Giulia Quadrifoglio. Once again a record was set for the lass at 7 minutes and 32 seconds flat, the fastest time ever for a four-door sedan.
Now at the Geneva Motor Show, Alfa Romeo is celebrating their past successes with two special editions of their Stelvio and Giulia performance vehicles. Dubbed the NRING Editions, both cars will only have a limited production run of 108 units.
What makes them special isn’t so much anything to do with performance as both vehicles will still have the same 510 hp twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine and 8-speed ZF transmission. Neither will either of them get anything in terms of new ride handling, or an upgrade to their torque vectoring differential or Chassis Domain Control system.
What they will get is a bunch of carbon parts, like carbon fiber-shell Sparco racing seats, carbon-ceramic brakes, a wheel and gear shifter with carbon fiber inserts, and carbon fiber rear view mirror caps.
The interior has been redone with leather and microsuede along with a new steering wheel. The side skirts have been redesigned with, you guessed it, carbon fiber, and the Giulia will even have an available option for a roof made entirely out of the carbon stuff.
There will also be numbered badges so you know exactly which of the 108 units you were able to buy.
True to Alfa form, their statement plays up the fact this is less a special version of an already special set of cars, and more like purchasing a “sensual emotion.”
"This is not just a car; it is the tangible expression of invention, hard work and dedication, the secret to achieving the most ambitious goals and smashing enduring records, and also expressing an almost sensual pleasure in the result attained."
There’s no price yet, but in my experience purchasing any emotion described with the word “sensual” does not come cheap.
