In the movie Back to the Future, when Marty asks Doc why he chose the Delorean, the answer was that he wanted to travel to the future ‘in style’. We abide by that logic considering how futuristic the DeLorean looked for its time. While 2015 as per the movie, back when it was released, was imagined with flying cars, it is time to accept that we are years away from it, even in 2022.

However, as far as futuristic-looking cars go, the same statement is arguable. And a prime example among the handful would be cars from Polestar. A Back to the Future franchise with a Polestar? Now that’s something we would like to see. But besides the point, today the topic is not a DeLorean but the Polestar 6 LA Concept.

Nearly two weeks after the company announced the O2 Roadster Concept, Polestar says that all 500 slots of its LA Concept edition were filled. Note that the launch remains four years away. In our time witnessing the imminent shift to electric vehicles, there have been numerous concept cars that made us clench our pearls but never made it into production. But Polestar begs to differ.

In the fall of 2020, the company announced that its Precept concept would be retained as a production model, they even made a documentary following its production design journey. A year after that we learned that the car would in fact be the Polestar 5 sports sedan. That car was recently shown to us at this year’s Goodwood Festival in July.

Fast-forward to March, the company, in a special unveiling, showed us the O2 Roadster Concept which would see scaled production as the Polestar 6 in 2026. The launch was announced, to begin with, the aforementioned 500-number LA Concept edition followed by more standard versions.

Less than a week later the company put out a notification stating that all 500 of the cars were reserved. And we tell you why.

The company has confirmed that the drop-top 6 LA Edition will share the same powertrain layout as the Polestar 5 performance sedan. And we are not mad because this means that the car will come with an 800V electric setup that comes with two motors at each axle churning out a total of 884hp and 664 lb-ft of torque.

The performance numbers are quite interesting as well. The Polestar 6 will breach 60 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds and have an electronically-limited top speed of 155 miles per hour. However, it’s not just about warp speeds that will dig you in your seats as the car will have an expected EPA range of over 300 miles, which is quite laudable considering it is a performance EV.

For the 6, Polestar has paid close attention to driving dynamics making use of an aluminum platform that is quite rigid, lightweight, and comes with a balance for a possibly 50:50 ratio. This platform also underpins the Polestar 5 performance four-door GT.

Polestar has been popular for retaining its concept design in production versions and the story is no different here. The Polestar 6 LA Edition doesn't deviate much from the O2 concept, which in turn is derived from the Precept Concept.

The ethos of the design is sharp and comes with proper sports car proportions but is gowned in a more modern exterior. Polestar has worked hard on the car’s aerodynamics even with the roof in place. The overhangs are minimal, and the wheelbase has been stretched for maximum cabin space.

In spite of what seems to be a quite compact package, the car gets a 2+2 seating layout. The Swedish simplicity is quite evident seeing how the company has integrated hidden ducts all around the body to improve laminar airflow. The rather good-looking wheels and even the LED tail lamps have been aerodynamically designed to reduce air turbulence behind the car.

The Swedish idea takes center stage on the inside with a minimal design. Dominating the dash is a huge floating touchscreen infotainment system and sitting beside it is a chunky two-spoke steering wheel with a sleek fully digital instrument cluster that sits behind it.

Apart from this, Polestar has not unveiled a lot of details regarding the tech features on the inside. However, there is extensive use of sustainable materials. The car will use recycled polyester for all the soft-touch materials as well as a new thermoplastic mono-material which implies the use of single base material to create various components.

Considering all the aforementioned aspects, we are convinced that the 500 people who booked the car made a wise decision. The car has been announced with an indicative price tag of $200,000. To book one, a buyer would have had to spend $25,000 which amounts to $12.5 million in reservations alone for the company.

But given what the Polestar 6 LA Concept Edition brings to the table, it is no surprise that it is sold out already.
