The Grand Tour’s Richard Hammond recently set up his own car restoration business, The Smallest Cog, which has also gained a Discovery + TV show about Hammond’s venture. His colleagues of course were not going to let him start a new business and not go to check it out. Fellow The Grand Tour presenter James May popped along to The Smallest Cog’s workshop in Hereford, England, to generally poke and make fun about it for a video on DriveTribe, although May was, in a lot of ways, quite impressed.

Lavishing Love On His Sign

The first thing May comments on when he walks through the door is Hammond’s rather lavish sign for the workshop. May says that he has “lavished a lot of time and love” on the sign and thought about it. This he feels is in contrast to the Bentley hiding under a cover, and the space heater sat in the workshop not turned on! A Morris 8 is sat in the workshop too, and May wonders if it is even worth saving. It doesn’t take long though before May is quite impressed with it all.

May steps into Hammond’s painting booth, and he is in awe of it. It is a proper big booth, with a floor extraction system and with a heating system as well. It's all brand new and pretty fantastic. May then goes to have a look at the paint store and sees the multitude of paints, color palettes etc. that can give a car any finish that its owner desires. May walks around the rest of the workshop and says that it is very admirable what he is doing, although wonders if it's more of an expensive hobby instead of a business!

Who Let The Dog Out?

Towards the end of the visit, May quite amusingly opens the door to the kitchen and a little dog runs out. Asking if the dog is actually allowed out, the people working in the workshop say “no it isn't” so it’s a bit of a scramble to get the dog back into the kitchen. May takes the opportunity to check the kitchen out for himself, before taking a biscuit and remarking on how the workshop as a whole is quite a fabulous affair. It's clear from the video that despite the odd comical remark, May is quite impressed with the workshop.
