For Renault in Formula 1, 2021 has been a massive shake-up. To start, the works team is no longer called Renault, but Alpine, the sporty division of the company. Revived in recent years with the A110 sports car and sporting stunning blue livery on their F1 cars, the company has unveiled perhaps the ultimate commuter cars. To be driven by F1 team drivers Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon, Alpine has revealed the A110 trackside cars in the same colors as the Formula 1 team.

The cars made their debut during the recent race at Imola, with the A110s featuring the same iconic Alpine colors that adorn the A521 F1 car. These particular road cars are based on the most potent version of the A110, the A110S which produces around 288 hp, and they weigh just 2,456 pounds. This provides a highly impressive power ratio of 8.53 hp / lb.

Renault is keen to push the Alpine brand into the wider world, hence the rebranding of the works Renault team to that of Alpine. Laurent Rossi, Alpine CEO said, “When the A521 was presented, it was a true joy to see the Alpine name on a Formula One car and it is just the same feeling today to see the Alpine F1 Team name on an A110”.

The A110 made its debut back in 2017 and it was the first car produced by the iconic brand in some years. The company reached its peak back in the 1980s and the original Alpines were renowned for their rallying prowess. This push with the road car and F1 team is all about bringing the brand back to the forefront.

This Season Has Been Tough So Far For The Alpine F1 Team

So far, the 2021 Formula 1 season has not been easy so far for the Alpine team. After taking two podiums thanks to Daniel Ricciardo in 2020, the Australian left for McLaren in a move that, the short term at least, seems to be paying off, as Alpine drivers Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon have struggled for pace. It will be interesting to see if the team can bring itself closer to the front through this year and into 2022 with F1s big rule change incoming.
