A family-friendly super sedan may still be a bizarre concept, but you may want one more than you think. If you want to know more about the new Mercedes-AMG GT63 compares to its competition, then you've come to the right place.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 is the 4-door big brother to the AMG GT, a supercar that since its release back in 2014 has taken many different forms. The GTR, GTR Pro, GTR Roadster, and the GTR Black Series, which holds the factory production car lap record around the Nürburging.

So it comes as no surprise that when Mercedes-AMG added two extra doors and shifted power to all 4 wheels that this car had some pedigree to back itself. With the sportier GT 63S model priced at just north of $160k, it's not just your normal sedan.

The engine is the same that AMG has spent years fine-tuning, a gorgeous twin-turbo V8, that puts down 630bhp and will reach 0-60 in just 2.9 seconds. Quite ridiculous numbers when you remind yourself that this car has 4 doors.

The AMG GT coupe is also extremely practical. Mercedes have really been setting the bar with interior comfort and this is no exception, a clean minimal cabin that can be full of carbon if that's your thing or one that isn't overwhelming for daily driving. After all, this car has 4 doors, so it's more than likely that it will be doing the school run and grocery trips.

This 4-door supercar category is quite a niche market, but it's not surprising that all of Mercedes' main rivals have something fierce to offer, so let's take a look at the competition.

Audi RS7

Audi's RS division is firmly established and known for providing some amazingly quick cars that are reliable and practical enough to daily drive. Audi has revised the RS7 since its release and this latest model is a contender for the super-sedan king.

The RS7 uses the same recipe as all its competitors, it has a bi-turbo V8 with Audi's clever Quattro system and will see a 0-60 time in just 3.3 seconds. Think of the RS7 as the RS6's cool brother, it's a little bit more daring but there is hardly any separation between them when they went head to head in a quarter-mile.

To add to this the RS7 is the cheapest of the bunch with a base model clocking in at around $114k, Audi offers spacious and clever interiors that much like the AMG, don't feel too much to live with daily.

Porsche Panamera Turbo S

This is the one that probably matches the GT63S best pound for pound. Porsche has been producing the Panamera since 2009, so it's fair to say that they have the most experience in this category.

Much like the GT63, Porsche has taken the AWD twin-turbo V8 approach pushing out 620bhp with a 0-60 time at 2.9 seconds. However, the Porsche feels more sophisticated and almost quite sleeper-like. The Panamera also offers the most variety of trim options including a hybrid.

The problem here is that Panamera's seem to depreciate very quickly, so unless you are intending on keeping for life, this might not be as good of an buy from new as the AMG. With this being said, buying a used Panamera seems like a solid option considering the fact they reach around $160k from new.

BMW M8 Gran Coupe

The last on this list is probably the least popular and falls under that if you know you know kind of category. The M8 gran coupe is BMW's luxury, super-fast 4-door. Think of the M5 if it went to the gym.

Unlike the AMG the BMW is very sensible and doesn't make much noise despite the BMW equivalent twin-turbo V8 layout.

Unlike its smaller M-family members; the M3 and M4, the M8 lacks the new kidney grills which caused quite a stir when announced.  At just shy of $130k for the base model, the M8 gran coupe doesn't seem to offer too much performance over the Audi, Porsche, or GT63.

The playing field is small and this battle for super sedan king is not as competitive as some others. However, the GT63 holds the Nurburgring lap record for this "executive cars" category, which is a huge badge of honor for any car to hold.

The interior is sleekest, although the M8 does offer the amazing iDrive system, which has gained lots of praise over the last few years.

The engine sound is still miles above, neither the Audi nor Porsche come close here, the AMG V8 is one of the best-sounding production engines out now.

Going fast with 4 doors is something that the German manufactures have loved producing over the years, probably due to unrestricted autobahn's allowing school runs to be done in record times.

The GT63 is sensible enough; with the clever switchable 4Matic+ AWD system which is a big threat to Audis Quattro and BMW's X-drive, but it's still also exciting and emotional; the perfect blend for a daily driver.

The driving modes on the AMG offer drift and race settings alongside comfort modes for city driving; a delicate balance which the other cars haven't been able to perfect.

The 4-door sedan has been injected with a racing pedigree and these examples show it best, but the AMG offers the full package. With its hefty price -tag, the AMG GT 63 is a 4-door supercar in every way.
