Aston Martin has announced that it will begin production of an SUV that will be based on the DBX concept. It's only logical that in a world where Bentley Bentaygas and Rolls-Royce Cullinans roam the streets as the most opulent SUVs around, that Aston Martin wants to get in on the action too.

In 2015, the English brand unveiled the DBX concept at the Geneva International Motor Show as a two-door sports SUV, with the traditional Aston Martin queues such as the swooping roofline and the taillights from the DBS. The concept was presented as a two-door model, but it's unclear whether the new SUV will retain the configuration or go with a four-door model instead. The new SUV will be based on this concept and is reported to be called the Varekai, which is Roman for the word "wherever."

It has been rumored that two powerplant variations of the SUV will be available. The first is e a variation of the V12 engine that is currently in the Vantage. The second would be the more interesting and powerful combination put into a hybrid package.

Speculations are that the new SUV will be out to get the fire-breathing Lamborghini Urus, which is already packing 650 horsepower. In order to get to the Urus' level, or higher, the Aston Martin might feature a Mercedes-Benz AMG derived 4.0L engine, combined with an electric engine capable of 250 horsepower. The word on the grapevine says that this combination would produce upwards of 700 horsepower. If this is the case, then the Aston would also top the Bentayga and the Cullinan, which both make 600 horsepower respectively.

The new SUV production will begin in the last quarter of 2019 from a new factory in St Athan, Wales. It's also reported that the new model will create new employment for more than 1000 people. It's truly refreshing to see carmakers going out of the box and creating marvels that not only look great, but that also perform very well in an efficient and dynamic manner. This is definitely an SUV that gearheads around the world are waiting impatiently for.
