Aston Martin will revive the name Vanquish for their next generation of mid-engine supercar.

Was there any doubt that Aston Martin would bring back Vanquish moniker? Not really. They haven’t even mounted the tombstone for the regular Vanquish, which stopped production this year. Aston Martin is still making the Volante convertible and top-of-the-line Vanquish S models.

Those concerned that the Vanquish name would be relegated to the dustbin of history can now breathe a sigh of relief. According to Aston Martin chief creative officer Marek Reichmann, Vanquish will live on in a completely new car supercar.

“Without saying yes, that sounds like a plausible solution for a beautiful name like Vanquish,” he told Australian automotive mag Motoring.

Reichmann was at the launch ceremony of the DBS Superleggera in Germany. The Superleggera is Aston’s latest GT coupe that has generated a roar of approval from critics, with Reichmann saying that the name was better suited to their latest creation. Vanquish is a special name and requires an even more special car.

“Obviously, Vanquish is an incredible name for us. Ever since the first Vanquish, it has stood as the most powerful brute in the family but we felt, more importantly, this was a true DBS more than a Vanquish because of the base product and how we’ve derived it to get to DBS,” Reichmann said.

“It’s a more appropriate name for this car. Vanquish is a very special name and we’ve got some pretty special cars coming.”

Aston Martin has committed to bringing 7 new models to market over the next 7 years, so they have no time to waste on mere hype. Reichmann said they’ve already got 12 scale models and 3 full-size mockups of the new Vanquish, which will be a mid-engine car to rival the likes of the Ferrari 488, McLaren 720S, and Audi R8.

Power is likely to come from a Mercedes-sourced 4.0-L twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor, making the Vanquish a true hybrid. There’s also going to be a lot of technological crossover between the new Vanquish and the Valkyrie hypercar, meaning electric all-wheel-drive is a distinct possibility.

Expect to see this mid-engine Vanquish sometime in 2020.
