When Audi unveiled the e-tron GT at the 2018 LA Auto Show, it was a warmly-received electric concept that few expected to carry over into a real-world model in the guise it was revealed. Fast-forward to a year and a half later, and Audi seems to be pushing through in giving us its first all-electric super sedan in more or less the same flavor as what was on the car show display stand, at least if the spy photos are to be believed.

More than Skin Deep

The photos that were nabbed of a fully-camouflaged e-Tron GT undergoing testing depict a vehicle that will, in many ways, be faithful to the original and much-lauded concept car. Although the production electric sedan will certainly have to make do with some pragmatic changes such as smaller wheels, less-pronounced side cladding and conventional door handles among others, it will maintain its taut and aggressive profile and most of the athletic gait of the concept vehicle.

This will be very encouraging to Audi and electric car fans in general, as the field for a high-performance electric vehicle will gain another attractive entry, in addition to the present titans of the niche, i.e. the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan.

Electric Dynamic

Speaking of the Taycan, the e-tron GT shares its Volkswagen Group brethren’s J1 architecture, meaning that it will not be based on the new, upcoming PPE platform for next-generation larger electric vehicles that’s being jointly developed by the companies. The current aluminum and steel platform features an underfloor battery design and supports 2 electric motors, one on each axle.

The total output of 582 hp is sufficient enough to propel the AWD sedan to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds via the aid of a 2-speed transmission, much like the Taycan. As for the interior, no new details have been released but we can expect minor changes to the elegant and advanced driver-centric cockpit of the concept vehicle.

Worth its Wait

While the Audi will not dethrone the Taycan as the top dog in price or performance, it will be a welcome and sober choice for drivers looking for quality in an attractive electric performance sedan. We can hardly wait.
