Electric vehicles (EVs) are still a long way from being the standard of the motoring world, with some of the issues delaying this inevitable future being high cost, long charging time, limited range, and of course the absence of the driving engagement associated with gas-powered engines.

Nevertheless, Electrical vehicles have come so far from what they used to be, with new EVs delivering performance beyond belief and possessing features and qualities set to revolutionize the automotive industry.

For the sake of the planet, many hope and believe the future of automobiles is electric and the Audi e-tron Sportback is one of those cars that takes us closer to that future. The Audi Sportback is a proper SUV, an example of a top-notch, luxury, ultra-modern performance EV that stands out amongst EVs and stands up to any comparable conventional vehicle in all areas but the presence of an engine. Here are 10 features that put the Audi e-Tron Sportback ahead of other EVs.

10 Fast Charging

The long charging time for EVs is one often cited by many of its critics. The e-tron Sportback, however, is making a strong case for the diminishing validity of this criticism. Unlike earlier EVs that require a break of hours to recharge their batteries, the Sportback comes with a fast charger capable of delivering 150 kW of charging power to charge the 71 kWh battery to 80% of its capacity in just 30 minutes.

That is an impressive 221 miles of Autonomy in 30 minutes. For comparison, the Kia Niro EV, which is a similar electric SUV, will take twice as long to get to 80% of its capacity with its 100 kW charger.

9 Range

range

Like everything about electric vehicles, battery technology has gotten better, translating into an increase in range and reduction in user anxiety. A fully charged Audi e-tron Sportsback is capable of driving 276 miles on a single charge. That is way more than is required for daily work commuting and just about enough for a half day's worth of driving when traveling.

The Ford Mustang Mach-e and Chevrolet Volt EUV which are similar electric SUVs in the same class can drive 211 and 247 miles on a single charge, respectively, showing how well the Sportback measures up to its peers.

8 Performance

The Sportback is powered by two high voltage electric motors capable of delivering a combined maximum power output of 315 kW. Each axle is driven by one electric motor to deliver a dependable four-wheel drive with maximum torque of 339 lb-ft and a towing capacity of 3600 lbs. As is expected of an EV of the Sportback class, it is quick, capable of going from 0- 62 mph in 5.7 seconds, and it can reach a maximum speed of about 125 mph in its lowest trim.

Regenerative braking in electric cars enables the recuperation of energy that would have been otherwise wasted to charge the battery. The Sportback allows the driver to select the level of regenerative braking to be implemented based on desired drivability and comfort.

An automatic mode is also available where the vehicle uses the driving data and predictive technology using the map and traffic data to change regeneration levels. This intelligent system optimizes the regenerative capability of the car and leads to a much higher efficiency than similar EVs.

6 Wide Charging Station Network

Refuelling conventional cars are easy, filling stations are scattered at regular intervals along any route. Charging points for EVs however, are not as plentiful, also an issue is the uniformity of charging plugs.

network

Audi has, however, done a good job of providing a good network of charging points, especially in the European market. The charging points are also built to be adaptable to different public and privately owned charging stations, coupled with the short charging time and high battery capacity has made range anxiety a non-issue for the Sportback. 5 Very Spacious

As can be expected of an SUV, the e-tron Sportback is very spacious to provide a comfortable ride even with three passengers at the back. The headspace at the rear of the Sportback is slightly reduced compared to the regular e-tron due to the slight downward arc of coupe-cut of the roof towards the rear.

Nevertheless, there is still room for comfortable sitting even for tall individuals. There are also many hidden storage spaces around the interior, large door bins, deep glove box and coffee holders all add to the practicality go the Sportsback.

4 Driver Assistance Technology

A sense of quality is overwhelming once sitting behind the steering wheel of the Sportsback. The dashboard forms a long continuous structure that spans the width of the car and gives a stylish look and feel. The center console houses the directional “gear change”, cup holders, the 12V charging point, and different accessibility buttons, all arranged in a way that is stylish and classic.

All that said, the Sportsback’s interior is one that packs a lot in a simplistic fashion and one that would take a very long time to get over.

2 Available S Sport Version

However, for even more extreme EV enthusiasts, the Sportsback comes in an even more powerful version, the e-tron S Sportback which has an additional motor at the rear. The three motors of the S version combine to produce an impressive 503 hp in boost mode.

1 Torque Vectoring

torque vectoring

When cornering the external wheels of a car move faster to keep up with those on the inside. In a conventional vehicle, the differential manages the distribution of torque that results in the difference in speed to achieve a uniform drive.

In the Sportback, this is handled by a control unit capable of electronically controlling the amount of torque supplied to each wheel as required by slipping conditions or cornering. This ultimately results in a very smooth driving experience for the Sportsback.
