Ford went about introducing their Galaxie models in 1959 and the production went on until 1974. The car's name drew inspiration from the space race that was taking place at that time. A few years later, for 1962, Ford added the "500" moniker to new, more luxurious versions of the Galaxie and as time went on, some letters (such as LTD and XL) were added to denote higher and sportier versions -- for example the Galaxie 500 XL.

But back to 1962; Ford's Galaxie 500 was available in various body styles including a sedan, hardtop, and convertible, all of which were plusher and boast more sophistication than the preceding models.

More on the plusher interior and sophistication to follow as we reveal the best features of the 1962 Ford Galaxie 500.

For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with 500 and 500/XL denoting the higher series. This model boasts an engine that often goes by the name the "Mileage Maker" as it was a 3.7-liter beast. Back in the 1960s, it was a rare occasion to find such a huge engine in a car. Yet, Ford took the plunge and went about ensuring that they could offer their customers great value (and fun) for money.

The 500XL model came with a 4.8-liter engine in the base model. Thereafter, a 7.0-liter was also available during this year for anyone looking for extra power and speed. Yet for most people, the 3.7-liter would be more than enough for an everyday car.

The Ford Galaxie 500 saw more of a softer and rounder look than its younger siblings. With the tailfins gone, the 500 models did appear to be much more refined and plush.

For the 1962 model, both hardtop and convertible roofs were on offer. Whether the customer would choose a hard or soft top, the 500 models were a lot heavier than the previous designs. This was due to their aluminum body panels and larger-displacement engines. Later in the production run, customers will notice much lighter and quicker Galaxie's as Ford took it upon themselves to correct this issue.

Yet, the look and shape of the 1962 Galaxie 500 are pretty remarkable and way ahead of their time. In later years, the Galaxie models did revert to the angular exterior. Hence, the 1962 model is quite unique in the lineup when it comes to its appearance.

Similar to the plusher design outside, 1962 saw a revamp inside too. The interior of the 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 features a few additional luxury items in comparison to its younger siblings.

These features include plush red cloth and vinyl interior throughout the entirety of the car, deep bucket seats, and plenty of legroom.

Overall, there is a lot to love about the 1962 model of the Ford Galaxie 500. From its Mileage Maker engine to its one-of-a-kind rounder look, it oozes sophistication and class.
