When it comes to cars, Japan is known for being the home of not only some of the most reliable cars but also many of the coolest. Just to name a few of the most well-known Japanese carmakers, there is Honda, Toyota, Mazda, and the list goes on, and on.

The 1990s were a great decade for the auto industry as a whole, despite many people longing for the muscle cars of the 1960s and ’70s, and even the '80s to a certain extent. There were some pretty cool cars from the ’90s, and many of our favorites were produced by Japanese companies.

To celebrate this often-overlooked time in car history, here are some of the coolest Japanese cars of the 1990s.

The 1993 Toyota Supra Is Awesome

The Toyota Supra is one of the most iconic sports cars of all time. It has a long history and as many people know, the Toyota Supra was even featured in “The Fast and the Furious”. All the year models are considered to be great, despite the 1994 version being banned in the US, but the 1993 model is often thought to be one of the best.

The 1993 Toyota Supra is powered by an inline 6.3-liter engine. It has a max 320-hp at 5,600 rpm. This iconic beast also has a torque of 315 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm. The Toyota Supra has a 6-speed manual transmission and the car is rear-wheel drive, according to Edmunds.com.

When it comes to speed, the 1993 Supra can do the 0 to 60 mph test in only 4.6 seconds. This is for the turbo version of the iconic car. The base model, which has 220 hp and 20 lb-ft of torque, does 0 to 60 in a respectable 6.8 seconds.

Overall, this is just a cool car. It’s a sleek little thing that doesn’t disappoint when it comes to performance. And it’s also a beautiful-looking ride, especially by '90s standards.

Car and Driver once called the 1994 Acura NSX “A Fighter Jet for the road”. This car represents some of the best that '90s cars had to offer. It’s fast, it’s a handsome car, and it’s still in production today, at least for now. However, the 1994 model still holds a special place in the hearts of many.

The Acura NSX has a powerful 3-liter V6 under its hood. The transmission is a 5-speed manual and it’s rear-wheel drive. This all leads to a 270-hp at 7,100 rpm and a torque of 210 lb-ft at 5,300 rpm.

This ride can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in only 5.2 seconds. It goes a quarter-mile in just 13.7 seconds at 104 mph. The top speed is 162 mph.

People truly love this one. Not only for its speed but also its unique '90s look and feel. It’s an awesome car that’s worth every bit of the hype surrounding it.

The Mazda RX-7 Should be Mentioned More

Another iconic Japanese car is the 1991 RX-7. This is a car that is loved by some car enthusiasts, but that is often overlooked when it comes to great cars. It’s fast, but it doesn’t have all that unique of a look, which is perhaps one of the reasons it may be underrated. But with that aside, it’s a great car.

The Hatchback turbo version is powered by a 1.3-liter engine that is paired with a five-speed manual transmission. It has a maximum 200-hp at 6,500 rpm and a torque of 196 lb-ft.

While this may not be the most popular car from the ’90s, you can see the influence it had on later cars. These cars are pretty rare, particularly the turbo version.

Many of our all-time favorite cars come from Japanese automakers. They have some of the fastest, most experimental, and simply some of the coolest vehicles.

The ’90s were an interesting time for everything- fashion, music, film, but the cars were truly something special. Many of them have much of the same look, which is one of the reasons why 90’s cars aren’t as celebrated as the ones from other decades. Hopefully, over time people can put that aside and give 1990’s cars the respect they deserve.
