There are a couple of reasons as to why cars have four wheels. It isn't just because four is an even number or because some people consider it lucky. Cars are built with four wheels for reasons that concern safety, performance, and stability. But just like most things, something so common can also be boring. That's why amidst the four-wheeled cars of the automotive industry, you're also likely to find cars with more than two pairs of wheels.

The thing is, wheels are there for a purpose, so for a regular car to have more than four wheels, there must be some goal to it, right? Not necessarily. Some of these cars are hitched with five wheels or more just because the owners felt like it, while some cars are best with more than four wheels to fulfill their off-road duties.

A lot of cars with more than four wheels look absolutely horrid, then there's also the cool ones worth getting for your garage.

via Supercars.net

Though this six-wheeled car doesn't appeal "cool" to absolutely everybody, we can all agree that the name Panther, for a car sounds like something that will definitely sell. Unfortunately, that didn't apply to any of the Panther Westwind's cars.

In 1977 however, the makers decided to work on a sports car that would be forever remembered by car enthusiasts. It had a twin-turbocharged V8 8.2L engine capable of 600 horsepower. The Panther 6 was a competent rival of other great cars like the Ferrari 512 BB and Lamborghini Countach that had two fewer tires.

9 Packard Cavalier

via Old Cars Weekly

One of the hardest things to learn when it comes to driving is getting your car to parallel park. It gets harder when you actually have to do it with other people making you feel pressured. As a solution to this, Brooks Walker took one of the regular 1953 Packard Cavalier and modified it in a way that he thought would help drivers achieve parallel parking - by making a very strange car.

The result was a Cavalier that had a fifth wheel at the rear end, similar to how SUVs would carry a spare tire at the back. This weird addition to the car made use of hydraulic belts and pumps so it can be raised and lowered.

Its main purpose was to test out tires for the popular brand, Michelin. The company wanted to test out what will happen to the tires if used for high speeds. But they were concerned about the possible consequences if a regular four-wheeled car was used, and so the Citroen DS PLR was born.
