If you own a supercar you’re probably not going to lose much sleep over the price of fuel. Our guess is you’re probably more interested in the car’s nought to sixty speed time and what noise it makes when you hit the gas pedal than the cost of a liter.

But it is interesting to see how the current crop of premium supercars compare when it comes to fuel economy. With everything going green, gas prices still rising, and electric supercars popping up all over the place, some supercar owners may be keen to see how their cars are helping to save the planet.

A research team from a company called Zutobi, an online Driver education resource, has compiled an interesting report on supercar fuel performance. Taking data from each manufacturer, The Car Guide, and AAA, they calculated ratings for each car and produced a set of league tables which names and shames some of the world's most exclusive sports cars.

Supercars That Cost The Most To Fill

This is a pretty easy one for them to calculate. Taking the fuel tank size of the car (in liters) and multiplying it by the average cost of gas, which was $3.326 on 21 January 2022, should give you a fairly accurate total cost to fill up a car. Armed with this information the researchers reported that the most expensive supercars to fill to the brim.

Taking first place is the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. The gorgeous Italian coupe packs a 5.7 liter V12 engine which produces 533 hp. Topping up this car’s 108 liter tank will cost you around $359.

And in second place is another Ferrari. The 599 GTO. This thirsty Italian horse hosts a 6 liter V12 engine, that produces 661 hp. According to Ferrari, it can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in under 3.3 seconds, and reach a top speed of 208 mph. The cost of fully fueling its 105 liter tank is $349.

Supercars With The Best Range

When the research team looked at which supercars offer the best range on a full tank of gas, the findings were interesting.

The awesome mid-engined Ferrari California hardtop convertible hit the streets in 2008. Ferrari loaded the early California models with a 4.3 liter V8 which packs 450 hp which consumes 10.5 liters of fuel every 100 km. And on a full 78 liter tank you can cover 742.9 km before having to refuel. Which is pretty good for a car that has a zero to sixty timing of 3.8 seconds, and a top speed of 194 mph.

And in second place is another Ferrari, the 458 Spider. Another mid-engined V8, with a 4.5 liter engine. The 458’s fuel tank is slightly bigger than the California’s, yet it won’t get you as far. It has an estimated range of 728.8 km on a full tank.

Weirdly, both of the above cars can outdistance the world’s most popular car, the Toyota Corolla. Which only has a range of 704 km.

And surprise, surprise. In third place is yet another Ferrari. This time it’s the Ferrari 458 Italia. This V8 coupe can hit 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and has a top speed of 202 mph. Even though it has the same size fuel tank as the Spider the furthest that it's likely to get you is 646.6 km.

Supercars With The Worst Fuel Economy

At this stage it is very important to include a disclaimer. Statistics like this one are quite frankly, pretty useless. As we all know, fuel economy is completely dependent on a wide variety of factors. The way you drive a car, the traffic conditions at the time, the weight inside the car (number of passengers/luggage), the weather conditions, and more. If you drive a car hard and keep pushing it to the red line, it goes without saying that you’re going to pay more frequent visits to the local gas station.

The researchers did some homework on each car and worked out the amount of fuel (liters) they would need for a 100 km trip. Let’s take a look at the supercars that they identified as being the worst fuel efficient of the bunch.

A car that needs no introduction, the Bugatti Veyron takes the prize for worst fuel efficient supercar. It eats through 30.1 liters of fuel every 100 km. Which is hardly surprising as it hosts an 8 liter, quad-turbo engine and packs 987 hp. And it can blast its way up to speeds in excess of 250 mph and weighs 4,300 lbs.

In second place is another Bugatti. The Chiron Pur Sport. A car which shares the same powertrain as the Veyron, but packs more horsepower. This prestigious 2-seater sports car can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 2.4 seconds, and reach 261 mph. For every 100 km of road it'll consume around 26.1 liters of fuel.

The Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SV takes third place. This exquisite machine carries a 6.5 liter V12 engine that packs 661 hp. The Murciélago can sprint to sixty in 2.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 213 mph. It needs 24.7 liters of fuel for a 100 km trip.

So let’s just have a quick recap. Ferraris cost the most to fill, but they have the best range. Bugattis are the least fuel efficient. And if you own any of the cars listed above you will not be on Greta Thunburg’s Christmas Card list (smile).
