While BMW is celebrating its 50 years of existence, it is looking forward to its most powerful model so far—the BMW XM. Nevertheless, BMW M is still refining the details of the new model. But for the sake of providing us with the greater picture, BMW unveiled the Concept XM at Art Basel’s 2021 Miami Beach show.

Concept XM Previews New XM High-Performance PHEV

For the first time since the legendary M1 supercar, BMW M is launching a new standalone model—the XM plug-in hybrid. As BMW M’s first electrified model, the XM is the technological catapult that will launch the division to higher levels of luxury and dynamics. As XM’s precursor, the XM Concept provides a glimpse of what it offers in terms of performance, design and styling.

Starting with performance, the BMW Concept XM features a newly developed potent M Hybrid drive system that combines a V8 engine and a high-performance electric motor. As per BMW, this hybrid could deliver 750 hp of max output and 737 lb-ft of peak torque. BMW M estimates the concept to offer around 50 miles (WLTP) or 30 miles (estimated EPA) of all-electric range.

New Front End To Define New BMW Models

The Concept XM features a new, progressive front end design that will trickle down to new luxury-class models. BMW split the headlights into two separate modules, with the daytime driving light sitting on the slim upper module. The kidney grille features a near-octagonal outline and serves as home to M-style double bars and grille elements that are seemingly floating within a high-gloss black surface.

The front end also features a boldly sculpted hood with two power domes and a pair of air intakes, a front apron with clean-cut black surfaces, and triangular body-colored blades at the outer edges.

On the rear, the Concept XM features two BMW roundels laser-etched into the rear window in reference to the BMW M1. The rear also features extremely slim L-shaped rear lights, as well as the hexagonal twin tailpipes of the dual-branch exhaust system.

An Interior Exuding Luxury And Performance

As a luxurious study, the BMW Concept XM features an interior that exudes high performance and extroverted luxury. Expressing high performance are its carbon fiber surfaces with interwoven copper thread, new BMW Curved Display screen, various red accents and tri-colored vertical elements on the center console. Meanwhile, BMW M implemented luxury through the warm brown leather of the front seats and the deep aquamarine (Petrol) wrappings of the broad rear bench.
