BMW has taken a diversion from the design language for its recently launched cars. While it still has the controversially massive front kidney-grille, BMW has almost completely changed its face. The lights are set up with the LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) placed on top and the headlamps placed lower down on the front bumper. The i7 differentiates itself from the new 7 Series through a blue accent line at the base of the bumper. The rear of the car has a blue accent line as well.

Lucid Motors takes a cleaner approach to design. The Air has horizontal design elements that dominate the design language barring two vertical slats in front that make the car look wide. It has chrome around the headlamps, the base of the bumper, the side skirts, and the rear bumper. The Air also has a very interesting-looking tail light design.

The BMW i7 uses two electric motors to push out a combined 536 horsepower and 549 pound-feet of torque. This drivetrain comes connected to a 101.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, and the car does 0-60 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds. It will even go to an electronically limited top speed of 149 miles per hour. BMW estimates that the car is capable of around 300-miles of range. It is fast even at charging, as it supports up to 195 kilowatts on a DC fast charging station. These can give 80 miles of range in 10 minutes. It gets even better for those owning the i7 in America as, through Electrify America, they get unlimited free charging for the first three years.

The Lucid Air is no slouch. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup pushes out 1080 horsepower and can make the car run a quarter-mile in just 9.9 seconds. An impressive performance at the drag strip. Lucid is also pushing the envelope in terms of range. The car has an estimated EPA range of up to 517 miles per charge from the 113 kWh battery. It claims 300 miles of range with only 20 minutes of charging through a DC fast charger.

BMW i7 and Lucid Air: Interior

It’s 2022, so the interior experience has to be dominated by screens. At the front of the BMW i7 is a new Curved Display which houses two displays in a continuous piece of glass. One is a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, and the other is a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. However, the party is at the back. It gets an optional 31.3-inch 8K resolution screen that supports touch inputs and can fold itself into the roof. If you are too lazy to reach out to this screen, you can operate the software through a 5.5-inch touchscreen on each rear door’s armrest. There is in-built Amazon Fire TV and other online services that can be enjoyed while being laid back on plush reclining seats. Adding to the experience are optional 36-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with 4D audio, which in simple words, means even your seats have vibrations built in for a more immersive experience. These are some features that we would rank amongst the best features of the i7.

The Lucid Air, in comparison, looks rather conservative with its interior design, but it is anything but. There is a massive 34-inch 5K display on the dash. This panel integrates three screens, including the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. It still gives preference to physical controls, and that will be a big win for those who want buttons over screens. It also has Alexa built-in that adds features that can be operated just by voice commands. This includes navigation, calls and messages, smart home control, adding items to your shopping list or streaming media.

The rear seat passengers have enough natural light keeping things fresh. Since the entire roof is glass, the cabin feels spacious and well-lit. The Air even has a massive boot space of 26.1 cubic-feet.
