It has been nearly a year since BMW revealed the new G42 generation of the 2 Series.

However, gear heads are more excited about the hotter, performance version of the BMW 2 Series – the BMW M2; slated to arrive for the 2023 model year, the G87 M2 isn’t just a pipe dream.

It is actually coming, as evidenced by the latest images taken in Mexico.

BMW M2 Is On Holiday In Mexico As It Nears Production

As to why the BMW M2 was in Mexico, the German carmaker is actually planning to exclusively build the car at its San Luis Potosí plant in the country.

BMW is building the 2 Series at the plant, and it makes sense for the carmaker to assemble the hotter version at the same premises.

But of course, the M2 hot sports coupe is essentially different from the 2 Series coupe, and BMW still doesn’t want the public to know how it looks by wrapping it with heavy camouflage. In an Instagram post by BMW M, the next generation of the M2 was basking under the intense heat of the sun in Mexico. Apparently, BMW M sent the M2 to the roads for some tests.

The BMW M2 was heavily camouflaged, which makes it hard to fully discern the looks or even the finer details of its design.

Looking closer at the details, BMW M has also added extra pieces to the bumpers of the new M2, in a bid to conceal its true appearance.

Even the famous kidney grille isn’t discernible; despite the heavy camouflage, it is safe to assume that his M2 test prototype is close to the production version.

This was not the first time that people saw – and took pictures – of the M2, but since BMW M took these pictures in Mexico (where it plans to build the M2), it would only be reasonable to suspect that the performance division is already past most of the stages before production.

While the exterior of the M2 prototype is heavily camouflaged, its interior isn’t.

In fact, CarBuzz managed to capture a few images of a prototype in Germany - as the spy photos show, the M2 prototype seems to have a different styling and hardware than the 2 Series, especially when it comes to the infotainment screens.

It's worth noting, this was the interior of an M2 prototype a year ago, which means things might or might not have changed since then.
