BMW announced that the M3 and M4 competition packages will now be gaining some additional driven wheels. In this press release, BMW reveals that the M xDrive trim will be available for the M3 and the M4 starting in July of 2021. Coupled with the Active M differential, BMW says these new variants offer a more dynamic driving experience and a "More inimitable M feeling."

Since the inception of the M3 and the M4 the rear-wheel drive platform has been the only option available on these performance icons. Previously debuting on the new M5, the M xDrive AWD system has now trickled down into the 3 and 4 series M cars.

BMW states that the M-specific xDrive system is specifically geared towards quicker acceleration and putting all 510 HP to the tarmac as efficiently as possible. The track-focused M cars have had their entire drivetrain revised to fully utilize the dynamic grip achieved with this new layout.

With the adaptation of the new all-wheel drive system, BMW has specifically designed all of the other drivetrain components to work in harmony together. The M xDrive system, M Active Differential, and DSC are all designed to communicate a plan to deliver power at the right place at the right time.

Using electronically controlled clutch disks to divert power wherever it is needed, BMW ensures power delivery is smooth and dynamic. The 8-speed automatic transmission was also mentioned to be specifically geared to match the power delivery with this new AWD system.

However, the dynamic experience does not start and end with the drivetrain. The M3 & M4 competition allows 3 different selections for drivetrain modes. The modes essentially alter the vehicle's preference of power delivery to the rear wheels in escalating frequency. Rear wheel drive purists will rejoice at the option to disable power to the front wheels, leaving the car in a rear wheel drive only mode.
