BMW has unveiled a new special edition model of the M5 to celebrate its 35th anniversary. The 2020 edition, which will be limited to just 350 units, has been named the M5 Edition 35 Years and will debut in July.

The original BMW M5, a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series, is a classic sports sedan. The first model was hand-built on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1, which made it the fastest production sedan at the time. The vehicle debuted at the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1985. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1985.

The new 2020 sedan includes a few exterior design changes such as a distinctive matte-metallic grey paint finish, known as the BMW Individual Frozen Dark Grey II, and 20-inch Y-spoke M wheels finished in Graphite Grey. Interestingly, the M5’s rear badging has disappeared for what BMW describes as “an elegant and understated” look.

The special edition also features black brake calipers, although buyers can select the carbon ceramic brake package with gold calipers. The interior has reupholstered BMW Individual Merino black leather M Sport seats with beige contrast stitching, tread plates inscribed with the “M5 Edition 35 Years” badge and a laser-engraved numbered plaque that serves as the cup-holder cover. The center console displays a gold trim with M5 Edition 35 Years engraved in white. The dash and door panels sport a gold trim, while the door sill plates also include gold trim.

The special edition BMW M5 is powered by the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine featured in the M5 Competition. The car produces 616bhp and 750Nm of torque fed to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, enabling the M5 to go from 0 to 62mph in 3.3 seconds with an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.
