Last year, the powerful and ever-so-sporty BMW M GmbH expanded its high-performance and track-focused line-up, with the introduction of the new BMW M5 CS - a limited-run, special edition 2022 sports sedan.

Building on the M3 CS, M4 CS, and the M2 CS, BMW’s new flagship BMW M5 CS takes the BMW M family a step up the ladder, setting new standards with outstanding performance features combined with an exclusive and luxurious look. The 2022 BMW M5 CS has a mean competition – the likes of the Audi RS 7 and the Mercedes-AMG E 63.

Set to be the brand’s quickest and most powerful production car, the BMW M5 CS packs a sturdy V8 engine with 630HP+ on tap. Remaining true to the BMW philosophy, the M5 CS comes in a sports sedan shape, with a 2+2 seating arrangement and lots of technology. Priced at around $175,000, the M5 CS is cheaper than the Porsche Panamera Turbo S.

At a glance, the M5 CS looks like a typical BMW M sedan, but it conceals one of the most powerful engines in the BMW lineage. We’re taking a look at the 2022 BMW M5 CS, and why it’s the ultimate car for enthusiasts.

The style and details of the BMW M5 CS are inherited from its big brothers: BMW M3 CS, BMW M4 CS, and BMW M2 CS. The purpose-built BMW M5 CS is based on the chassis and frame of the BMW M5 Competition.

Weighing 4,114 pounds, the M5 CS is about 230 pounds lighter than the 2021 BMW M5 Competition, thanks to its extensive use of lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastic, making up the roof, rear spoiler, front splitter, and hood.

A variety of unique exterior details, such as the gold-bronze paintwork on the BMW kidney grille surround, and 20-inch forged alloy wheels set the CS apart from the competition.

The interior of the M5 CS is simple and largely similar to the standard M5 lineage. Despite being a performance-oriented sedan, the BMW M5 CS stays true to its luxury philosophy. Its unique interior can accommodate up to four people in its M carbon front and rear bucket seats, which are padded in black leather with red accents and premium stitching. Integrated headrests, together with illuminated M5 badges for the front seats, pay homage to the legendary Nürburgring track.

The gearshift paddles are made from carbon fiber material. The steering wheel looks remarkable, with Black Chrome trim wheel spokes and stylish, integrated buttons. In the center of the dashboard is BMW's iDrive touchscreen interface, which packs user-friendly menus and a super crisp display. Its infotainment screen comes with an advanced voice recognition system, which is the best in its class. Like the seats, the center console is concealed in black Merino leather, complemented by red double stitching.

Under the hood, the new BMW M5 CS packs a strong 4.4-liter V8 engine. With BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology, the powertrain delivers a staggering 635 horsepower. That’s about 10hp more than the BMW M5 Competition’s power output. The peak ponies arrive at around 6,000 RPM, with the 7,200 RPM engine redline.

Combined with the modified turbocharger dynamics, direct injection allows the engine to churn out its full 553 lb.-ft. from 1,800 to 5,950 RPM. To maximize the durability, the engine lubrication is supplied by two pumps instead of one, even in high-g track competition.

This chassis was adopted to reduce the ride height by around 7 mm. The new Chassis is designed to work with track tires. The suspension system has shock absorbers originally designed for the BMW M8 Gran Coupe. These shocks not only pave the way for a comfortable ride but also reduce tire pressure to improve handling, no matter where you drive. To account for the vehicle’s lower weight and increased tire performance, the front and rear axle bearing springs of the BMW M5 CS have been recalibrated and the damper control has also been revised accordingly.

The BMW M5 CS Has Excellent Acceleration, Feedback, And Maneuverability

The BMW M5 CS packs the kind of performance you’d only expect on a supercar, achieving a 62-mph sprint in only 3.0 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds faster than its M5 rivals. This, by default, makes the M5 CS the quickest production BMW. This quick acceleration is courtesy of the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the 8-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox. Its top speed has been electronically limited top speed to 189 mph.

Behind the wheel, the M5 CS feels smooth and light. The steering is sharp and precise. The strong engine produces a loud noise that can barely be hushed by its noise-muffling interior. The lightweight construction, the unique chassis tuning, and the M xDrive system with the central intelligent control of the active M differential all contribute to suitability for the racetrack.
