BMW has revealed its Vision M Next hybrid concept today showcasing their idea of an electric future.

Or at least a partially electric future. It’s a plug-in hybrid, after all.

We’ve been hearing rumors that BMW’s M division is looking to start making their own cars. It seems that BMW executives might be inching ever closer to offering the green light with the newly revealed Vision M Next, a concept vehicle that seems to stand alone even if it’s largely based on the BMW i8 hybrid sports car.

The Vision M Next showcases the latest technological advances with BMW, including autonomous driving, electrification, and services. It also showcases their new "EASE" and "BOOST" catchphrases, where "EASE encompasses all the experiences during a journey when the vehicle assumes the task of driving," while BOOST is for the "ultimate driving experience."

Which is all well and good, but let’s get down to this concepts brass tacks. Under the hood (or engine cover--we’re not too clear on where all the bits and pieces fit) is a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine and an unspecified number of electric motors for a combined system output of 600 hp. Top speed is 186 mph, while zero to 62 mph takes just 3 seconds.

Since the car can be driven in both electric all-wheel-drive or regular rear-wheel-drive, we suspect the engine is in the back and there are three electric motors, with two on each front wheel and one in between the engine and the transmission in a very similar setup to the Ferrari SF90 Stradale. That’s just a guess though--BMW is mum on the details.

We know that the body is partially composed of carbon fiber along with "synthetic fibers, anodized titanium, and painted surfaces," which doesn't tell us much other than the fact that this car is supposed to be highly advanced, materially speaking.

The cockpit is equally advanced. A horizontal steering wheel sits ahead of a curved glass display and behind that an augmented reality heads-up display to show things like current speed and battery power. A button labeled “Boost+” allows the driver to engage maximum power whenever they want, although the default is to use electric power for low-demand situations.

All-electric range is 62 miles, which BMW says is more than enough for day-to-day driving.

No word on whether or not the Vision M Next might be a sign of things to come, but we’re hopeful this puppy eventually sees production.
