Petersen Car Week kicked off an exciting Friday with an all-online version of the classic Bonham's Quail Motorcar Auction event. Following up on Friday's lineup, which included the official unveiling of a pristine Porsche 993 Restomod by Gunther Werks, and Thursday's JDM garage tour and future collectible coverage, the real action began in earnest as Bonham's hosted a wide range of vehicles spanning the long history of the automobile from the earliest motor carriages to timeless classic cars today's world-conquering supercars.

Over many hours of auction action, Bonham's had the privilege of overseeing some pretty amazing cars fetch pretty amazing prices. The day started with some light warmups, including a set of two weekend tickets to the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, which may or may not actually ever happen due to the coronavirus pandemic, a turn of events that could explain the $220 final bid. A Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet with coachwork by Karmann started off the automotive lots, eventually reaching a modest price of $14,000.

The event slowly ramped up in intensity, with a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL hitting the auction block next, where it was bid up to $41,000. Then a 1936 Rolls-Royce 25/30 Sedanca Coupe with coachwork by J. Gurney Nutting & Co reached $79,000. The first car to crack the six-figure mark was a gorgeous 1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Double Bubble, which closed at $120,000 before a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E63 S AMG Wagon came just shy at $99,000.

Still To Come

Things took a big turn when a 2018 Bugatti Chiron arrived to steal the show. With over $400,000 in options alone added to its original sticker, the Chiron featured a full green carbon-fiber exterior and, of course, the famed quad-turbocharged W16 powerplant routing power to all four wheels. It reached a bid of $2.12 million. Other highlights included a 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster that climbed to $235,000 before a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 500K Offener Tourengwagen sold for a sky-high $1.2 million.

Still to come are the likes of an E-Type Jaguar, a 1936 Cord 810 Westchester, a Dodge Viper, and a BMW Isetta. And big money should still be expected to arrive when a Lamborghini Centenario and a Porsche 718 RSK Spyder both hit the block.
