British boutique carmaker Bowler is teasing a brand new car that’s based off the Land Rover Defender.

If you’ve never heard of Bowler, that’s because they tend to fly under the radar. That happens when you’re a small British company with less than 40 employees hand-building a handful of specialty off-road vehicles.

But if you’re into the rally scene, or are otherwise super keen on off-road tech, then you probably have a different view of the name Bowler. These guys are like the McLaren’s of the off-roading scene.

Well, like McLaren from 30 years ago, anyway.

So far, one of Bowler’s biggest sellers is the Bowler Bulldog, an off-road rally-spec off-roader that took more than a few design cues from the Land Rover Defender. It also uses the same powertrain and more than a few Land Rover components.

But now Bowler is teasing a brand new car that is also based on the Land Rover Defender as well as Bowler’s new Cross Sector Platform, or CSP for short. The new platform is like a modular chassis that can support a number of different drivetrains and body styles. It can even take a 6x6 layout if that’s what you’re into.

As for the upcoming car, we’ve only got what Bowler teased on their Twitter post. It certainly looks like a Land Rover Defender head on, but that’s the only view we’re given. We are provided a heft load of engine grumble, which sounds like an extremely rich V8 engine trying to break through whatever device you’re hearing it on.

Bowler vehicles are not ones to skimp on power. Expect whatever this new vehicle is called to make well over 400 hp. It’s also expected to be road-legal, which is something that not all previous Bowlers can say.

Pricing is hard to guess at this point. We know most other Bowlers have been north of £100,000 (or around $130,000 USD), and we don’t expect this latest one to buck the trend. How far over that price all depends on what technology it comes with.

Expect the full reveal from Bowler in the coming weeks.
