With Mercedes rolling out several SUV models of late, one that's been getting considerable attention has been the GLE 350de Hybrid thanks in part to the 315 horsepower generated by its 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine and electric motor. But on Friday, German-based supercar developer Brabus announced a couple of modifications it created to get more out of that Mercedes SUV.

PowerXtra Drivetrain Adds Dynamics

The biggest of the two developments concerned its PowerXtra Electric D35E drivetrain, designed to boost the performance of the GLE 350de Hybrid's diesel engine and electric motor. With the drivetrain, the SUV jumps to 354 horsepower with 605 pound-feet of torque.

The result is a top speed of 134 mph using the diesel engine, marginally higher than 130 mph without the Brabus modification. Its performance from a stationary start to 60 mph takes 6.2 seconds, while the Mercedes lacking the PowerXtra takes 6.5 seconds to reach that speed.

To be fair, the GLE 350de is noted more for its handling than its speed anyway. And the Brabus PowerXtra has demonstrated stronger results over other GLE-class SUVs, including the 400d 4MATIC model. It spiked the SUV's top speed from 149 to 155 mph and knocked down its zero-to-60 mph sprint duration from 7.1 to 5.5 seconds.

Aerodynamic Enhancements

Performance is one thing, but looks are another and in that regard, Brabus seems to be serious about this task. They upgraded the front and rear end to provide a sleeker look and for some cool accenting, the company added courtesy lights that activate when the driver gets near the vehicle or opens the door.

Also added for curb appeal was a hatch-mounted rear spoiler and rear fascia inserts for black-chromed tailpipe tips. But the crowning touch was the high-tech Monobloc wheels with tires sized at 295/35 ZR 23. To jibe with the sporty tire look, an air-suspension can lower the vehicle by up to an inch.

Brabus, which previously souped up an electric Mercedes EQC SUV and released a novel electric Ultimate E urban supercar, announced another work in progress providing a PowerXtra for the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC+ which has a 4.0-liter V8 engine that generates 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. It's safe to say what Brabus does to soup up this SUV will be something that will be worth the wait.
