The Bugatti Bolide is considered as the lightest, most outrageous hypercar in the brand's history. But it goes beyond being a quick and fast supercar – it is also the most beautiful hypercar in world, according to the Festival Automobile International. But right from the start, Bugatti designed the Bolide to be extremely functional, and that’s the recipe for its supreme beauty.

Runaway Choice As Most Beautiful Hypercar

According to Bugatti, the Bolide was the runaway choice among four finalists of the ‘Hypercars’ category in the awards. It won the award by a substantial margin, as judged by an expert jury of design professionals. The current Bolide is an experimental concept. However, the production form of the hypercar – which would arrive in the next three years – would have very few changes technical and visual changes.

Bugatti intends to keep the functional design of the Bolide, as it is the reason why its beauty is mystifying. Seeing a Bolide is priceless, but an example is ultra-expensive at EUR4 million. Bugatti will build just 40 examples of the Bolide and deliver the first units in 2024.

Design Focus First On Function, Then Form

Achim Anscheidt, Bugatti Design Director, revealed how the Bolide became the beauty that it is. The design team started with the functional core of the hypercar – its W16 quad-turbocharged engine. The team rebuilt the Bolide with the bare minimum, thereby respecting its technical requirements the foremost. Anscheidt noted that the design team focused first on the function and then developed the form.

As a functional hypercar, the Bolide takes inspiration from Formula 1 cars, which is why it looks more similar to these aerodynamically sophisticated racers than hypercars. Example of these similarities are its numerous air ducts, delicate front end design, exceptionally low stance, ground-hugging seating position and an air intake scoop on the roof. Further providing downforce are its striking rear diffuser and dominant rear wing.

An Inescapable Functional Beauty Inside

But while the Bolide is extremely functional, it still inherits Bugatti’s distinctive personality and tradition, says Nils Sajonz, Bugatti Design Head of Special Projects. Because of its lightweight and nimble nature, the Bolide is pure both in design and its purpose – resulting to an inescapable beauty.

The functional character of the Bolide is also apparent inside. There is no trace of trim elements from the Chiron. Instead, the cabin features a functional design sans the flourishes or luxuries of Bugatti’s other hypercar offerings. The interior offers minimal distraction and maximum visibility. Featuring a curving wraparound glasshouse, the critical control functions of the Bolide are all accessible to the driver.
