In an announcement made on June, 1, Buick released imagery and details of the Buick Wildcat EV concept car. The electric vehicle, which is a two-door coupe, wears Buick's restyled badge and is an indicator of the brand's upcoming design architecture as it moves to expand its lineup of electric vehicle offerings — the first of which is currently slated to be available in 2024.

Buick Wildcat EV Concept

The Wildcat name is not new to the Buick brand, and was previously used on a model offered across a variety of body styles in the 1960s. The Wildcat EV concept is a vastly different vehicle than the predecessor that shared its name, particularly in the fact that it is an EV and at this time, there is no indication that the model is actually set for production.

Buick has a history of introducing boldly designed concept cars that do not actually indicate a future model, but that do influence actual Buick vehicles that follow it, the Avista concept is one such example from the not so distant past.

It seems that the primary purpose of the Wildcat concept, for now, is to serve as an expression for the future of Buick's EVs. Buick has previously indicated that their entire lineup will go electric some time around 2030. In alignment with reviving a historic Buick nameplate for the concept car, Buick will also bring back another moniker in relation to actual production vehicles which will carry the Electra nameplate, which Buick used on cars until the early 1990s.

Buick has already made sizable shifts to their lineup in recent years. Once known as a brand that made cars, particularly sedans, Buick now exclusive offers SUVs and crossovers in the United States. While the Wildcat's two-door coupe design is unlike anything else Buick currently offers, it is not clear if the upcoming Electra lineup of vehicles will include something similar. Buick last offered a two-door coupe in 1999 in the United States.

Buick states of the Wildcat: “Our vision of what the future holds debuts with the Buick Wildcat EV Concept. It is a leap forward that builds on our legacy of innovation, as well as expressing a vision of Buick’s new design direction and pointing to its all-electric future. With its poised, ready-to-pounce stance plus its design for advanced artificial intelligence and biometric technology, the Wildcat EV Concept is efficiency and innovation in a head-turning package. Which is to say, it’s electric in every way possible.”
