GM is being hit with a class-action lawsuit over bad infotainment systems installed in previous-gen Cadillac vehicles.

It looks like GM is getting caught for yet more bad behavior. A class-action suit is accusing the biggest carmaker in North America of producing infotainment screens that fail and then refusing to replace them under warranty.

Cadillac called them CUE screens (for Cadillac User Experience), but don't let the name fool you: they're just the same infotainment screens as everyone else. The only difference is, CUE screens break after a few years.

According to the lawsuit issued in US District Court of New Jersey, CUE screens have a tendency to crack due to delamination between the protective adhesive film and the screen. This eventually leads to electrical issues and the entire screen becoming unresponsive. So whatever song you were listening to at the time becomes the only song you can ever listen to.

Plaintiff Tonya Gruchacz bought a brand new Cadillac ATS in 2014 and then suffered this cracked screen issue in 2017. It was still within the 4-year or 50,000-mile warranty period, so she thought she could just get the screen replaced free of charge, but upon arriving at the dealership she was told she’d have to pay $1,200 out of pocket.

Tonya refused to pay for something that should be clearly under warranty, and after some persistent poking around she eventually found out that Cadillac mechanics “see this issue all the time… the screen is not cracked, it’s the laminate.”

A Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) was issued in 2014 that warned Cadillac dealers that CUE screens could become cracked and unresponsive and that the only fix is to replace the whole center stack. It also proves that GM was aware of this issue since 2014, but they stopped short of issuing a recall.

Affected models are 2013-2017 Cadillac ATS, 2013-2016, Cadillac SRX, 2013-2017 Cadillac XTS, 2014-2017 Cadillac CTS, 2014-2017 Cadillac ELR, and 2014-2017 Cadillac Escalade.

Anyone experiencing the same issue is encouraged to contact Lite DePalma Greenberg, and Poulos LoPiccolo, who are representing the plaintiff.
