Canada’s exclusive 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport trim is coming spring of 2018, but the US basically has the same trim already.
Region exclusive vehicles are nothing new. Most manufacturers sell specific cars in specific markets to better cater to that market’s taste. For the most part, Canada gets the same cars as America does with a few notable exceptions such as the Kia Rondo or the Mercedes B-Class. Canadians just aren’t Americans when it comes to a love of giant cars.
Canadians do love trucks, however, so Dodge decided to give Canada a little extra love at the Canadian International Auto Show. There in the snowy valley of Toronto, Fiat Chrysler unveiled the Canadian exclusive Sport trim for the Ram 1500 pickup.
It seems like FCA considers Canadians to be on the gullible side because the Sport trim can basically be recreated in America with available trims and packages.
But before we get to how you can recreate the Sport Stateside, let’s go over what makes a Sport so sporty. First, it only comes with the big 5.7-liter V8 engine that puts out 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. It comes in both four and two-wheel drive, and can come with a quad or crew cab depending on owner’s preference.
Outside the body, the wheels are standard 20-inches but there’s available 22-inchers with black or chrome colors. LED lights are standard in both the front and back, and there’s a bunch of fancy trim and badging that matches the body color the owner chooses.
Finally, the hood gets the extra sporty treatment by having a bunch of unnecessary venting and a big black 1500 badge.
Now that’s all out of the way, here’s how you make the same truck in America. First, start with the Laramie trim, so called because the trim is apparently marketed for smokers. Next, get the Sport package which basically gives you all the neat trim and special hood without the big black badges. And that’s it —you now have basically a Ram 1500 Sport.
You can even do it with the Big Horn trim level. Get the same Sport Package, and then shell out for LED lights. The Big Horn can also have the smaller V6 engine if you don’t feel the need to move a house with your pickup.
The Sport goes on sale in Q2 in Canada or is available now in America for those Canadians unwilling to wait.
